but firstly i want to clarify some questions.

solving my problem i saw that kubuntu has some commands that do not exist in the ubuntu...
but if i will install in the kubuntu the gnome package then i will have also all the ubuntu commands plus the kubuntu commands??

Re: Dual Booting Vista 64 Bit with Kubuntu 8.10

          hi,
try the commands that i talked with others in the previous topics,
some commands that i think are for ubuntu and do not work in kubuntu are:
          gedit
          sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

          and one more question,

in the kubuntu that i cannot install the GRUB, i wrote something in the plasmoid, and now, how i trough the live cd will have access to the data that i have written in the plasmoid??

It looks like you have multiple problems -- you need to fix one, then fix the next -- not all at once.

            1. First, boot your Kubuntu Live CD. When running the Live CD, go to Qqmike's Grub Toolkit here:

            http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3081671.0

and follow the instructions to install Grub in the partition where Kubuntu is installed.

            2. When Grub is installed, then you can edit the /boot/grub/menu list file to add the Windows partition, as instructed in the blog:

            http://davestechsupport.com/blog/200...-with-gparted/

except of course you now know that the KDE text editor is kate, not gedit, and that you use "kdesudo" to start it in root mode.

            3. Once you have the Grub menu and dual booting working, you can worry about your plasma edits, which should be unaffected by your booting repairs.

Re: Dual Booting Vista 64 Bit with Kubuntu 8.10

              hi,
finally i have instlled the grub,
and no one of the topics existing here helped me,
many of them were giving me some kind of erros messages
i gest typed in the comand line:

              sudo grub
              root (hd0,5)
              setup (hd0)
              quit
              exit

              and worked as never seen.
              and my question is
why here are so many topics that have not worked for me??
i ever tried to use the info from the link:::
              http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3081671.0

but the instructions descibed there have not worked for me!

and one more thing what stage1 and stage2 stands for?

There are plenty of topics here on fixing GRUB issues. In fact, the link you referenced is the primary guide to GRUB issues, written by Qqmike - the 'Grub-meister' in KFN. Within that guide, Section 3 address exactly what you said you did 'in the command line:' Within the link posted, you would have found (it is an extensive thread) this comment: « Reply #29 on: July 30, 2008, 03:30:23 pm »where Qqmike answers Detonates question with:
(from a Live CD or a Linux distro)
                sudo grub
                grub> root (hdx,y)
                grub > setup (hdx,y)
                grub> quit
                $exit
re-boot to test it (of course, it will work!)

... where (hdx,y) is the partition of the Kubuntu root filesystem
