XP on one hard drive, Kubuntu on another-question

    Hi.

Since I'm totally new to Linux (apart from trying out Freespire around a year ago and having many problems with installing anything) I would like to know if it's possible to have XP on one hard drive and Kubuntu on another and be able to switch between the two...

ie, have both running but one suspended while I use the other.

I say this because obviously I have no problems with XP and can get online and into this forum but if I'm in Kubuntu and can't get online then I'll be forever booting between the two operating systems and that takes time.

The fact I couldn't get my internet working with Freespire is what made me give up on it (and Linux) as getting help online became such a drawn out pain.

    Thanks

What you are asking for - to have both, Windoze and Linux running at the same time - requires that you install virtual machine software and then install the desired OS within this virtual machine.

If you do this in Linux, there are a few packages you can use - VirtualBox or VMware Player. Either permit you to install Windoze inside of your running Linux. In this way, you can have both operating systems running at the same time.

      Thanks for the reply Snowhog.

I already have XP installed on one hard drive so can I use the virtual machine to install Kubuntu to get it up an running and any problems that appear, sorted out?

Does the virtual machine require an install of the OS after every reboot or do you just install the OS in the virtual machine once?

Just had a look at VMware and they have a Virtual Appliance Marketplace with Kubuntu 8.04.1

      Link.. http://www.vmware.com/appliances/directory/1375

Would that be the best route for me?

      Thanks again.

          Thanks dibl.

What I'm really asking is will this work the other way around? ie I have XP installed already on my machine and that's not about to change. I want to see if I can get Kubuntu running and running well with internet access so can I install VMPlayer in XP Home, run Kubuntu in VMPlayer and install things like my internet access?

          Thanks

I think you're talking about a "wubi" installation. I've never done it, but I'm told that's the simplest way to install *buntu in Windows.

Cheers dibl. That looks more like what I'm looking for.

                Hi:
I installed KUbuntu 8.10 on a hard disk in an external enclosure, leaving the XP disk alone until I'm completely converted to linux. The guided install made the process a breeze. The only gotcha I didn't plan for was the install of GRUB; I wasn't paying attention and now if my external isn't plugged into a usb port I'll get a GRUB Error 17. I haven't looked into what that is or how to fix it yet since it's a trivial inconvenience for me. Hope this helps.

In your original post, you are anticipating problems with getting online with Kubuntu. I suggest you run the live CD, and see if it connects. If so, you could go ahead and install Kubuntu with a very high assurance that it will connect.
