If you want to watch commercial DVDs then install
      1) kubuntu-restricted-extras; and
      2) the Medibuntu Repository particularly libdvdcss2 and w32codecs or 64.

See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu for installing Medibuntu. Note that it is a 2 part process - adding the repository and getting the GPG key.

Personally, I've always used Kaffeine. Not installed by default in II. I don't really care for Dragon Player, and I haven't used VLC so I can't comment on it.

I've used VLC since I found it worked cross platform. It's not the prettiest but it sure does work like a champ!

Kaffeine - simpler to use, nicer to have the file browser integrated in the gui. Also works much better with a DVB card.
