restricted drivers

Hello, My Toshiba laptop came with nvidia video drivers, the 1st time I loaded Kubuntu with the driver, I got a kind of a plaid screen, I did not know how to go back to the generic driver, so I re-loaded Kubuntu and have not loaded the driver yet. I would like to use the 3D features of the nvidia driver, if i load the restricted driver and the same thing happens how do I get back to my old setting? Will live drive help me get back?
