    Intrepid64/KDE4 slow on Laptop

Well, first let me get the specs out of the way:

    AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology TL-60 (2.0 GHz, 2 x 512 KB L2 cache)
    2.5GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    ATI Radeon X1250
    Kubuntu 8.10/64bit

Now, it started with the installation. That took 3 hours!! > Now it's installed and my entire system crawls and I get up to about 10% of my internet speed!! (after about 15 secs or so)

I'm a noob and will admit it freely!!

I have searched the forum and tried changing from OpenGL to Xrender - didn't work.
I turned off all effects - didn't help.
I've run all the updates - no help.

A webpage takes, on average, a minute to a minute and a half to load. I have a 5MB cable connection so there's no reson for that!!!

    HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!

That suggests that something went wrong at the start -- it shouldn't take more than about 20 minutes. What was going on for 3 hours? If it was an optical drive seeking, seeking, seeking on a CD, that's probably an indicator of a bad CD.

I'm on my girlfriend's computer because it's useable!! lol But posting the results from running top isn't feasable really. My thoughts are that downloading and burning a new disk (on a different machine)would be the best bet. So I'll let you know if that helped

I agree. Check #1 here and follow the guidance:

ok, new download, new mirror and new burn on different machine. Steps 1 & 2 went quick, but step 3 took over 10 minutes. Alot of hdd access but not exsesive read access on the cdrom. Step 4 I used the manual option since I already have a linux partition. I set the mount point and the format option to true. Scanning disks dialogue takes a while with very little hdd activity. Step 5 went quick. Step 6 "Scaning files" & "Copying files" takes FOREVER!! I can't wait anymore. What's the deal

Ok I'm back!! No good news unfortunately The fresh install took a lil over 2 hours!! It's a hair faster, but I still have the same issues. I noticed when I was opening this window and terminal at the same time, that the bouncing terminal was whiting out the underlying graphics. Slow redraw. And here are the results from top:

              top - 07:48:11 up 31 min, 1 user, load average: 4.61, 4.06, 3.65
