    Virtual Memory

    Hi All,

After a lot of grief using MS Windows a friend of mine advised me to install Linux. I looked on-line and found Kubuntu 8.1 Intrepid Ibex. I've got a 5 year old Compaq Presario 900 with a 500 meg processor and 256 MB ram. It ran fine only terribly slow but very stable (the only thing was that I could not run more that 1 application otherwise everything froze) I was advised to put 1 GB (the maximum) memory in. I've done that now and I am sooooo happy

My friend told me after upgrading my memory I have to set the virtual memory on 3 times the ram so on 3GB. My question is: how do you do that and is this really necessary?
    thanks very much!!

    Martijn

By the way I am slowly understanding more of Linux but if I have asked a stupid question forgive me.

    Re: Virtual Memory

2G for swap is more than enough for your purposes on that system.

Tell us more about how you want to set up your system:

    - dual boot with windows?
    - got more than one hard drive?
    - got your data safely backup up already?

      Re: Virtual Memory

Thank you for your reaction but firstly I only want to use Windows if someone puts a gun to my head and forces me .

I have only one hard drive and everything is backed up.

My friend was suggesting it but I don't know if it is necessary.

      thanks, Martijn
