    Planeshift install question

Hi im pretty new to ubuntu and Planeshift will be the first game i install that ain't in synaptic or add/remove. I have very little scripting experience and i barely ever use command line.

So please guide me, in a step by step process, how to install planeshift.

    P.S. i've downloaded: PlaneShift-v0.4.02-x64.

Is that a .deb package format? Applications to run on *buntu need to be in Debian packages.

If "yes", then you can run Konqueror or Dolphin in root mode, via Alt-F2 "kdesudo dolphin" and simply right-click it and choose "Open with > Gdebi" to install it. That's assuming Kubuntu 8.10. In 8.04 I believe it is still "kdesu Dolphin".

Unfortunately I'm not familiar with that game.

If you could get the source code, it is (theoretically) possible to package it as a .deb package, if you're interested in learning that particular bit of know-how. I haven't done that.

It is possible, but far from assured, that it would install and run correctly on your system, by running the .bin file. It is also possible it won't run or install at all, and there is some possibility of inflicting serious damage to your system. Were I you, I would seek advice from other users of the game, who have succeeded (or failed, perhaps) in installing it on a Debian or Ubuntu Linux system.

Are you running a 64-bit CPU? PlaneShift-v0.4.02-x64 (Linux) is for 64-bit CPU systems. I'll assume that you downloaded it to either the Desktop or to your home folder. If this file is like the Google Earth .bin file, you need to mark it as executable. You can do this with Konqueror. Open the folder you save the file to. Right-click the file and select Properties > Permissions and ensure the Is executable box is checked. Then open a console, navigate to the folder the file is in and type:
                Code:
                PlaneShift-v0.4.02-x64
                and press Enter.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.
