    SOLVED (Mostly) console-kit-dae

I don't know whether I am complaining about something which is a feature or not

But, when I do a pstree -p I get this many instances of console-kit-dae showing up.

      Hmm:

      Package: consolekit
framework for defining and tracking users, sessions and seats

ConsoleKit is a system daemon for tracking what users are logged into the system and how they interact with the computer (e.g. which keyboard and mouse they use).

It provides asynchronous notification via the system message bus.

This package provides the system daemon and tools to interact with it.
And from the Ubuntu Forums > Possible hack?

I am no too worried that it may be a hack, I am more inclined to think that I have just set something up wrongly.
Also, the system is single user.

              Re: console-kit-dae

I wouldn't mind 'several' instances of the kit, but 50+ seems rather a lot.

hmm - killing it - no ill effects (i think). There is a bug report:

console-kit-daemon using a lot of cpu
                https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...it/+bug/284229

and there David Taylor wrote on 2008-11-11:
Ditto for me if I leave the PC/Lap Top on for some time when I return to it the fan is going full tilt and it's all due to the 'console-kit-dae' process making my CPU work alot. What is its purpose because if I kill the process there are seemingly no ill effects, can I just bin it and suffer no ill effects?
Wondering also: what it does ??

OK, I'll try killing it (them) and see what happens.

Doesn't seem to have hurt anything yet.

But how can I stop it doing it all again?

                        In that thread it says:
"disabled it in /etc/init.d/consolekit script (put exit 0 on the 2nd line of the script)"

I have been looking to do the same in my computer, but I can't find any reference to a consolekit.
