I am trying to configure a resolution of 1600x900. Have looked around a lot and haven't found anything that works.

Two things will help in (potentially) finding an answer to your question. First, what version of Kubuntu are you running? Second, is your monitor and video controller capable of displaying this resolution?

I am running kubuntu 8.10 and yes I can display that resolution. My screens native resolution is 1600x900 and in vista it works correctly.

If you launch K Menu > Applications > System > Screen Resize & Rotate (wait for it to appear in the system tray), and right-click on it, what resolutions are presented to you?

Missed your sig-line that says 8.10. My bad. :P

Did you have any issues when you installed? Did you have to use the safe graphics mode?

yes, I did have to use the graphics safe mode otherwise my screen was unreadable.

Try rebooting, and at the Grub menu, selecting the recovery mode kernel. This will provide you with an option to try and fix the xserver.
