    [Resolved] Adept in Kubuntu 8.10

I have just installed Kubuntu 8.10 on my laptop. So I wanted to get Firefox and Thunderbird downloaded. Also earlier today the package manager notifier ( if thats what it is called) also shows that their are 24 software updates available. But when I try to run Adept I can get as far as choosing a package and starting it. It dose the same thing when I click on the update notifier icon. It begins to run then gives the following message:

    Commit failed.
To continue, hit ok and we will try to recover. If you close the application now, we will not do anything and you may try to resolve the problem manually.
(If you suspect this is a bug in Adept, please also provide the following exception description in the report).

    The error was:
    APT Error. Context:
    Running dpkg,
    [ /usr/bin/dpkg, --status-fd, 3, --unpack, /var/cache/apt/archives/xkb-data_1.3-2ubuntu4.1_all.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/libqt4-webkit_4.4.3-0ubuntu1.1_i386.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/libqt4-sql-mysql_4.4.3-0ubuntu1.1_i386.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/qt4-qtconfig_4.4.3-0ubuntu1.1_i386.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/libqt4-qt3support_4.4.3-0ubuntu1.1_i386.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/libqt4-help_4.4.3-0ubuntu1.1_i386.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/libqt4-sql_4.4.3-0ubuntu1.1_i386.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/libqt4-xmlpatterns_4.4.3-0ubuntu1.1_i386.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/libqt4-core_4.4.3-0ubuntu1.1_i386.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/libqt4-gui_4.4.3-0ubuntu1.1_i386.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/libqt4-assistant_4.4.3-0ubuntu1.1_i386.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/libqt4-network_4.4.3-0ubuntu1.1_i386.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/libqt4-designer_4.4.3-0ubuntu1.1_i386.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/libqt4-script_4.4.3-0ubuntu1.1_i386.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/libqt4-dbus_4.4.3-0ubuntu1.1_i386.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/libqt4-xml_4.4.3-0ubuntu1.1_i386.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/libqt4-test_4.4.3-0ubuntu1.1_i386.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/libqt4-svg_4.4.3-0ubuntu1.1_i386.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/libqt4-opengl_4.4.3-0ubuntu1.1_i386.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/libqtgui4_4.4.3-0ubuntu1.1_i386.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/libqtcore4_4.4.3-0ubuntu1.1_i386.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/xserver-xorg-video-radeon_1-0x1.80ff4bfd6fd44p-1506.9.0+git20081003.f9826a56-0ubuntu2.1_i386.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/xserver-xorg-video-ati_1-0x1.80ff4bfd6fd44p-1506.9.0+git20081003.f9826a56-0ubuntu2.1_i386.deb, /var/cache/apt/archives/fglrx-modaliases_2-0x1.80ff4bfd6fd44p-1508.552-0ubuntu0.1_i386.deb ],

Do any of you veterans know what I need to do?
(Sorry I haven't had a chance to figure out how to send in a bug report yet, still new to Linux.)

By the way thanks to Snowhog for your help on another problem I had with Burning an ISO.

Open the Konsole and try this:

    Code:
    sudo dpkg --configure -a
Then when it is finished, try this:

    Code:
    sudo apt-get update
    Code:
    sudo apt-get upgrade
and let's see what you get. Post any errors that you see along the way.

      dibl
      Thanks for the fast response!

Ok when I went to Konsole and typed this:

      sudo dpkg --configure -a

It came back with the following message:

dpkg: parse error, in file `/var/lib/dpkg/available' near line 2:
      field name `

What is this telling me? And what should be my next step?

Hmmmmmm. I don't think I've seen this one before.

OK, I looked up that file on my own system. It is dated today -- it appears to be a dynamic file that records something about "available" packages and configurations. I ran updates this morning, so they're not still available, but perhaps they were right before I upgraded.

I'm going to suggest that you rename that file to /var/lib/dpkg/available_bak or something like that, and then try the commands again that I listed above.

            Re: Adept in Kubuntu 8.10

Since I am having this problem on just my laptop I have just set-up with K8.10 I think the best solution for now is to go ahead and go back to K8.04 until the 8.10 has a few more tweaks done to it. I need the laptop to be more stable and reliable since most of my files and info will be on it. I will keep K8.10 on my desktop so I can keep learning and experimenting. This way if I do something to crash it ( which the chances of this are high with me) I wont loose all my info or something like that. Sounds like fence straddling but I think I can exercise the best of both versions this way for now at least until I am more comfortable with 8.10 and I think I can learn more this way.
