How do I change the panel color and behavor?

I'm new to KDE 4.x. I've used KDE 3.x for a long time. How do I change the panel to be see-thru? or a different color? Also, how do I get the open windows to go in front of the panel? Now the panel stays on-top of all windows?

If you right-click on the desktop, ->Desktop Settings -> New Theme and it will show you what is available from KDE Look.

For see-through panels, etc., try Glassified or Glaze.

For the time being you have the choice of using existing themes or designing your own - here is how:

The autohide/cover panel options won't be available until KDE 4.2. In Opensuse they have already backported them, but I think that in kubuntu we won't see them until January
