system very slow. cpu at 98% most of the time

hi, hope someone has any idea to help

    i did cat /proc/cpuinfo:

    clflush size : 64

    i tried to run:
    kubuntu 8,10 rc (impossible slow)
    kubuntu 8.04 (very very slow)
xubuntu 8.04 (slow to very slow)

yesterday i was trying from live cd:
    xubuntu 8:10 (slow slow slow)
opengeu 8.04.1 (better, but not much)

it's the problem on the cpu?
it's there something i can do besides throwing the box?
i need that thing to work with the programs we r used to have
amarok, kopete, firefox, kaffeine, ktorrent.. ohh! i need it to run skype too!!
(i think that's mostly what i need, and it just need to work for a little more than a month)

    well, thank u

What is consuming the cpu cycles? Run top in a terminal. How much ram and swap? Run free -m in a terminal.

ohh i knew i had forget something.

      ram: 503.49 MB
      swap: 1.86 GB

      free -m:
total used free shared buffers cach
      Mem: 503 468 35 0 13 252
      -/+ buffers/cache: 201 301
      Swap: 1906 38 1867

      top:
(i can't paste it here 'cos is on another computer)
firefox is mostly on the top around 60 or 70% cpu
      but then is gets down,
xorg is always amid the 3 first places
      ktorrent too
      amarok
(but again i can't copy it here, and when i am connected to internet is impossible slow. and not always because firefox)
i know it's not much information.
      but it helps?
      thanks

Do you have an nvidia graphics controller?

Make sure that you're running 177.80 and then run this from a command line:
            nvidia-settings -a InitialPixmapPlacement=2 -a GlyphCache=1

            You should see immediate improvement.

If it works just add it to a script and start at boot.

Do Alt-F2 "nvidia-settings" with no quote marks. If you get an Nvidia utility that lets you change the X server settings, then it will say which driver version it is.

If problems, maybe this will help:

                  great . thank you.

                  it says:
                  Operating System: Linux-x86
                  NVIDIA Driver Version:169.12

and now? how i get the other one? 177.80?

hey, i did what you said on those 2 links.!! It definitely looks nicer than before. Really! WOW!
And it is a little faster, not much, but i am writing from this computer now.

i can copy now my top:

I was looking for a little while to the top and ktorrent and firefox were around 40% cpu
and xorg under them between the 20 and 30 %
                  this is the free -m:

total used free shared buffers cached
                  Mem: 503 475 28 0 10 182

                  Swap: 1906 38 1867

                  what else can i do?

ahh about the nvidia driver, now it is:
                  173.14.12
it got nearer to that 177.something.......
                  it's alright?
                  what should i do?

and ohhhhh, so very much thank you!!!
