My FTTH problem / connection problem

OK I posted this on II 8.10 part forum, but I got no answer...
Yesterday I booted from Kubuntu to Windows XP to check something... I stayed on XP for a while doing nothing suspicious I was surfing and installed some software... So today I log back to Kubuntu and my internet conection wasn't working anymore.
This happened before so I hard reset my modem, as this helped the last time. But that didn't help. I tried all types of hard resetting but it didn't help it just didn't want to connect.
I tried Ubuntu LiveCD and it didn't work there either.
At that time I became inpatient and decided to try PC-BSD 7.1. Well right now I'm on it and the connection works
(there are other things that don't work but that's besides the point right now...)
So my connection works on Windows and BSD but not on Linux any ideas why
I have a FTTH connection with security package. I had Intrepid Ibex 8.10 RC
Please really help me I don't want to give up Kubuntu just yet...
    Thanks in advance
I'm magnet for errors, problems and bugs...

FTTH means Fibre To The Home right?

Does this means you actually have a fibreoptic NIC in your computer, or is there some other stage?
I am running Ubuntu 8.10 (yes Gnome) with upgrades applied daily about 0900 UK time. Hardware is Dell Precision 420, 2x 800 MHz PIII, 512 MB RDRAM, nVidia GeForce 6800 128 MB AGP graphics, 18GB SCSI and 500GB IDE HDDs, DVD burner, Hauppage TV card.
