ok...just got this computer from a friend and totally new to this system...when I try to gain access to admistrator mode it tells me conversation with su failed...what does this mean

Your friend has given you the PC with Kubuntu pre-loaded? If so he needs to give you his password too as he will be the administrator.

By "administrator mode" do you mean you are trying to login as root or to use the "administrator mode" in kde?
Assuming you are trying to login as root, bear in mind that with Ubuntu there is no root user as such- you use sudo and not su.
eg sudo apt-get update <hit return> will receive a prompt for your password.
