    Re: A nice PIM

    Wow, very nice!

    I have actually done a
    Code:
    mv ~/.kde/share/config ~/.kde/share/config.bak
    followed by a

    Code:
    cp -r ~/.kde.bak/share/config ~/.kde/share/config
I must say that my whole KDE4 experience has improved enormously because of that - including kontact! Which of course means that I will be sticking with it

Thanks for you all help and tips and sorry about my flapping about

      Great.
Let me know when you have figured out haw to set up 2 or 3 different pop3 accounts and a separate gmail with their own names and folders.
I haven't been able to do that in Kontact and that is why I stick with TB (for now)

        Hi Fintan(and Toad)

I don't have any problem with the mail as both Windows and Linux point to the same mail folder, which is great.

I have a ldif file on the fat 32 drive which I periodically overwrite by exporting which is the contents of my address book. That's solely for recovery though.
I did investigate treating my address book the same as mail i.e having a separate folder for it outside of the TB directory but was not able to figure out how. Hence the periodic export. I wasn't aware I could synchronise between the 2 either. Your idea is interesting and I'll have a play although as Most Haunted Live is on every night this week it may be some time before I get my laptop back!

My laptop is at home right now but it turned up 3 separate errors relating to profile. That started on the first load of TB after installing the extension (from the repository) and every time thereafter. A possible clue is that the opening line was /usr/lib/thunderbird which makes me wonder whether it's looking in the wrong place for my TB profile.

Ha! That is funny, since that was one of the reasons why I felt uncomfortable with TB I prefer to have have two pop accounts report to one folder and two others to their individual ones...

Also, Kontact4 displays a behaviour similar to what you are after (the TB layout) and I'm so happy that I got rid of it now

There simply is no pleasing everyone, is there

How did you get the individual folders without making them by hand and using filters to pass emails to them?

              Re: A nice PIM

Gentlemen, on the system I am typing this reply, I use both KMail and Thunderbird, one at a time, either-or, with the same mail store, thus giving me access to my mail folders from either email client. It has separate inboxes for one POP account at my ISP, two GMail accounts, one Hotmail account and one AOL account. Naturally it is necessary to use the same dir format for the messages store rather than a flat file type of mail store (option in KMail). Everyone in this discussion is not a newbie and thus will understand that any "howto" has to be system specific, so I won't even try to tell you how to configure your system. However, it been working like that for several years on this Debian system. I do use separate address books but I exported a CSV file with addresses and imported it into the other one so I didn't have to retype anything. Note: I don't use this with Winders.

When I look at that toad, it looks like you renamed the .kde folder to a backup then copied it back as the .kde folder. It might have been just as easy to copy the original to .kde.bak in one step, but you know better than I what you are trying to do. It seems to me both would be the same so I don't understand how it could have "fixed" anything. Naturally, there is no need for me to understand.

If I remember correctly, I had the option of using global folder or separate folder at the time I added each account but that was a while ago. It is an option to select the Destination folder for each account in KMail if you choose to modify an account. You'd probably need to create the folder, if you're doing this after the account has already been added but you won't need to set any filters once KMail has been optioned to use the Destination Folder you choose.

              tinker, over and out.

                @ Fintan
Well, after having set up Kontact4 first time round it looked not too dissimilar to TB - which is not to my taste. Only after I did the quoted commands did everything look like my Kontact3 again (well, the set up, not the actual program).

Re which folders an account dumps its mail into: this is actually fairly easy to set up. You are free to set up a mail folder structure to your taste. In my case I have one for business, the structure of which reflects my business folders in /home and the other for private which is a complete mess You now go to settings - configure kmail - accounts - modify - select the destination folder in the advanced tab.

                @ Tinker

I use a separate home partition which I tied into the new install. Before going into kde, I moved my existing .kde folder to .kde.bak. So all I did was get the original, old config folder from the backed up .kde folder and use it to substitute the newer one - hope that was clear

                  Okay gotcha

Did you have a look at spicebird? I love it, although it is very beta.

Okay, not an install as such...

Spicebird looks cool! It has all that is required (I don't need time accounting) and displays that typical Mozilla feel...

Talking of which - I got accustomed to systray notification of any new mails and RSS stuff. The latter could be transferred the browser, but the former? I know there is notifiers for gmail, but for all one's accounts?

Just curious - I'll stick to kontact for now

                        Re: A nice PIM

Now got my laptop in front of me. The error is:

                        [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x8052000b (NS_ERROR_FILE_CORRUPTED) [mozIStorageService.openSpecialDatabase]" nsresult: "0x8052000b (NS_ERROR_FILE_CORRUPTED)" location: "JS frame :: file:///usr/lib/thunderbird/extensions/%7Be2fda1a4-762b-4020-b5ad-a41df1933103%7D/components/calStorageCalendarModule.js -> file:///usr/lib/thunderbird/extensions/%7Be2fda1a4-762b-4020-b5ad-a41df1933103%7D/js/calStorageCalendar.js :: anonymous :: line 382" data: no]

I haven't a clue what that might mean!

Actually a google search suggests it's something to do with sqlite - I have libsqlite installed.

Well, it certainly makes for gruesome reading.

Silly suggestion, but how about deleting the extension and files in question and reinstalling?

Nope, no joy. Interestingly after uninstalling my check of the filesystem reveals the file complained about not to exist.

More weird is the fact that I have now discovered that when I have the lightning extension enabled that error message appears every time I delete an e-mail! disabling the lightning extension makes it go away.

Perhaps it is because my e-mail folders are not in a default location?

I think like you I will stick with Kontact, at least for the time being as at least that works.

By the way I overcame my earlier problem with recurring to dos by treating them as events and that's now gone away!
