    Two Desktops- Two Operating Systems

    Hi!

I have a really important question that I was wondering about for a long while.

You know how there is the option at the lower right corner to choose between desktops? (I also found that there is an option to create a larger amount, yay for me!!) Well, I am wondering if it is possible to set that there will always be an option to just put the Windows desktop on one of them. Meaning, I can just switch over every time to Windows if I would like to (and vice versa), so I wouldn't need to choose between one or the other in the grub.

Is such a thing possible? If it is, or something at least close to this, please let me know.

    Many thanks!!

the answer is: no, it is not.
because desktop environment != operating system

what a lot of people do is run windoze as a virtual machine.
you basically run the two operating systems at the same time.
you can have applications from both operating systems run seamlessly together.
there are several ways to achieve this.
    see here.
    my choice would be virtualbox.
open source, easy to use, works well, supports virtualization technology, supports seamless mode.

if you have a cpu with virtualization technology things run very smoothly.
if your cpu doesn't have vt, things will run (understandably) slower.

    gnu/linux is not windoze

        How's this:

That's Win XP in a VMWare Player window, on one side of a Compiz cube on Intrepid Ibex.

          Whoa!!

That's exactly what I meant. How did you do that?

OK, there are really three main parts to the arrangement:

            1. Compiz (which requires accelerated graphics/GLX)
            (a) you gotta have a graphics chip and driver that supports GLX
            (b) you gotta install compiz and compiz config settings manager (ccsm) from the repos
            (c) you gotta set up the cube using ccsm

            2. VMWare Player -- a free virtualization tool:

            3. A virtual "machine" -- in this case with Win XP installed on it. I wrote an explanation some time ago on how to get that part done -- see Step 3 here:

What you are really trying to do is have a virtual Windows system loading into Linux. This is possible under a program called Wine or the Virtual Desktop. If you set this up - and it works for you, you will find you can install any distro or windows if you really wanna in a Linux virtual window - but why hang on to Windows since its a dumb operating system - just go for another Distro of Linux
