editing /etc/apt/sources.list

    editing /etc/apt/sources.list

    I have tried to get a new list from http://www.ubuntulinux.nl/source-o-matic

    I have a few questions
    1) can I use it for Kubuntu?
    2)how do I edit the etc/apt/sources.list...ie the list that is generated from that website, should I just copy and paste it on the original one, or delete the original one, and put the generated one over it?
    3) on the generated list threßs something about KEYS. DO I have to do anything more than just substitute the list? eg adding keys, or stuff like that?

    Sorry Im new to all this!Please can you explain the whole process to me?

    This will give you instructions on how to replace your sources.list with a new one. You can use the one suggested in this tutorial or the one generated by source-o-matic. The instructions remain the same either way.

    And Ubuntu and Kubuntu are the same distribution. They just have different desktop environments (Gnome and KDE, respectively).

      If you'll note, that key thing provides instructions for what to do if you get tirred of replying ignore every time your package manager tells you that it can't confirm Jonathan Riddell's key. So you can add his key once, or click ignore in Synaptic, many times. Like they say, Linux is about choices.

      Personally, I added the key by follwing the instructions.

        I was starting to get demotivated about using linux...sometimes i get stuck with certain things and dont know how to solve them (eg see my posts on adept, kopete, amarok in software support...reply if you can help please!)

          Hi everyone, this is what I get by doing:

          sudo kwrite /etc/apt/sources.list

          Error: "/var/tmp/kdecache-elisa" is owned by uid 1000 instead of uid 0.
          Link points to "/var/tmp/kdecache-root"
          Error: "/tmp/kde-elisa" is owned by uid 1000 instead of uid 0.
          Link points to "/tmp/kde-root"

          Anyway, it opens the source.list anyway, but I dont know why I get that error message

          Also, following the instructions from the psychocats page, I save the new list, close Kwrite, and when I do sudo apt-get update it gives me this error scritp:

            There seems to be something wrong with your /etc/apt/sources.list file, but I can't tell what it is. Please go back to the source-o-matic site. http://www.ubuntulinux.nl/source-o-matic Fill out the form. Don't forget to include KDE-latest ! Click on the box that says "Give me a sources.list!" Download the file that is generated. It is called source-o-matic.html but it is a text file.

            Back up your present /etc/apt/sources.list file by starting a konsole (K>System>konsole) and entering
            Code:
            sudo mv /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.old
sudo cp /where/you/downloaded/file/source-o-matic.html /etc/apt/sources.list
            Now, upgrade your system by entering
            Code:
            sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
            If you have any difficulty PLEASE POST your /etc/apt/sources.list file EXACTLY as it appears WITHOUT ALL THE ERROR MESSAGES.

              That source-o-matic page save me a tmp file, called konquerorljhYca.tmp----Ill do that procedure with that file name, rather than the one you gave me to see if it works.

                I think I have done a major damage!

                I have cancelled my sources.list

                From that procedure you gave me I did:

                sudo mv /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.old
                then
                sudo cp /home/elisa/desktop/konquerorljhYca.tmp /etc/apt/sources.list
                but it gave me impossible to stat /home/elisa/desktop/konquerorljhYca.tmp

                then I closed the konsole, tried to open my old list by giving the comand kwrite /etc/apt.sources.list and it opens up Kate with the list, which is completely blank.
                I tried to do sudo cp /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list_backup but it gives me this message: impossible to stat /etc/apt/sources.list

                What can I do? I think now I have a blank sources.list, matter of fact, adept doesnt start, and Im thinking its because there are no more repositories. I have tried to manually cut and paste on the Kate file, but it doesnt let me as it's only read document.

                What can I do? Please help...!!

                  I forgo to mention that when I do that kwrite thing, although it opens up the source-list it gives a message saying:

                  The configuration will not be saved.
                  Configuration file:
                  "home/elisa/.kde/share/config/kwriterc" not writable

                  Contact the system administrator

                    I think that your situation is not at all hopeless. First of all, I apologize; my instructions assumed that you would use the firefox web browser. Does the "konq...tmp" file still exist in your desktop directory? If so you can still copy it to /etc/apt/sources.list

                    Let's review what you have done. I hope that I understand the commands that you actually wrote.
                    (1) "sudo mv /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.old": renamed your /etc/apt/sources.list file to /retc/apt/sources.list.old, but it did not remove it. So it is still there with the name sources.list.old

                    (2) "sudo cp /home/elisa/desktop/konquerorljhYca.tmp /etc/apt/sources.list" should have copied the file in your desktop directory to your /etc/apt/ directroy with the name sourcrces.list, but the error message says that the computer (actually a program called bash) could not find the konq... file. That's why I am asking whether it is still there. If it is still there, I suggest you use konqueror to navigate to the Desktop directory. right click on the file, left click on rename (I'm sorry I don't know the Italian for that command) and rename the file to something simple like "joe.txt". The reason for this is that I suspect that you simply mispelled the very long and nonsensical name of the downloaded file. The other possibility is that you simply failed to capitalize the word Desktop. Unlike windows, Linux distinguishes between small and capital letters.

                    (3)If the file was still there and you renamed it successfully. Write click on the file and then choose "Preview in embedded text editor". Is it a sources.list file? If so go to (4) If not start all over with source-o-matic except if you must use the Konqueror web browser, at least rename the file to something simple. So that now you can go to (4).

                    (4) Use the command "sudo cp //homw/elisa/Desktop/joe.txt /etc/apt/sources.list".

                    (4')If none of this works, (or you get tired of doing things that don't seem to work) use the command:
                    "sudo cp /etc/apt/sources.list.old /etc/apt/sources.list" and you will be back to where you started, but since your old sources.list file was not working properly, I advise against this.

                      Thanks a lot! I have followed your instructions, and now I have my sources.list again. Anyways, problems are still there. Just wanted to say that in my etc/apt subfolder I have 1 sources.list kate file, 1 sources.list backup file, 1 sources.list_backup kate file and 1 sources.list_backup backup file, and 1 sources.list.old backup file. Is it normal? Or do I have more files than usual?

                      Anyway, back to the problems. I just thought Id copy and paste my sources.list below, and see if you think there is anything wrong.

                      After getting this sources.list updated, I wanted to see if the apt-get update function worked properly now. At first, it gave me the same error script as the one posted a few posts above. Then I thought that error script was due to not having configured apt-get for proxy connection, so i did that by typing:

                      I dont know if its something about my sources.list or because of my proxy connection. After configuring the proxy Adept gives me more packages, but it doesnt let me install them, because when clicking on commit changes I get the message:

                      There was an error commiting changes. Possibly there was a problem downloading some packages or the commit would break packages.

                      I dont know what to do.

                        First of all, you don't need all those backup sources.list files! Most of them are backups of lists that didn't work! You'll have to figure out which are which. One clue is the length of the file compared to the one you have now.

                        Second, the cipherfunk and amarok-latest repositories seem to be down as is the koti.mbnet.fi repo, but that should not cause the error commiting changes problem. Also, you really don't need the "deb-src" repositories unless you are planning to compile something, but I don't see any obvious cause of your committing changes problem. Try to install synaptic and then use that instead of adept to see if it gives better results.

                          I tried to install synaptic days ago by doing:

                          apt-get install synaptic but it gives me dependencies problems,
                          dpkg -i nameoffile.deb dependencies problems

                          any suggestion?

                              I have another post on amarok and mp3s, in software support, where you are helping me out, and it led me to this same problem of installing synaptic, and problems with apt-get update
