    Re: K Desktop 4.1 Fail

    kubuntu 8.10 is not yet deployed, its still a beta. So no wonder that problems might happens. You should avoid messing with beta's if you have no skills to handle problems.

    In answer of your problem:
    I suggest you to use command line ( ctrl+alt+f1 ), mount a usb device and copy all your data and then reinstall the distro from scrach ( obviusly not 8.04, not the beta of intrepid ibex)

      Instead of <Ctrl> <Alt> <Del>, try <Alt> <Backspace> to re-start x instead of re-booting.

        Backing up data is always good and yes this is a beta so a few strange things are bound to happen.
        Very brave

        You might want to try this:
        Load a live cd (preferably a kde3.5 version) find the partition your kubuntu is on in:
        system settings->advanced->harddirves&disks (or similar, mine is german)
        mount and activate your kubuntu or /home partition (if it is separate)
        open up konqueror, navigate to:
        /home/yourusername and activate view->show hiddenfiles.
        Now find the folder .kde and rename it to .kdeOld.

        Reboot and your installation will recompile a .kde folder. This is where all of your desktop settings are stored. Now you can configure your desktop as needed and copy over all your kmail, kontact, etc stuff from Old to new.

        I hope this helps and welcome to the party brave person
