    Problems with moving files

    I'm having an absolute nightmare with moving files from my desktop into desktop folders. I work in publishing so I have a lot of materials that I keep track of in files on my desktop. I use Konqueror to move the files around, and then KDE keeps crashing. When the machine restarts, all the files are back where they were before!! Even when I click the red "X" to get rid of them, they keep coming back.

    My husband installed Kubuntu on my computer last month and, to be honest, I hate it. It's been a disaster ever since, and I'm so frustrated that for a while I stopped using my computer. Suse was much more user-friendly. If somebody can talk me down here, or give me some ideas on how to fix these problems, please do.

    OK, OK -- 3 deep cleansing breaths!



    Put away the divorce papers -- this situation is surely salvageable. Tell us the version of Kubuntu that he installed, if you can, and maybe a little bit about the routine file copying that you need to do, and surely we can figure out a way to get it done without crashing KDE. Or perhaps we can even fix KDE so it will stop crashing.

      OK, so he tells me he installed version 8.04 Hardy.

      He tells me I need to warn you that I'm a "power user," and that I open up a lot of documents at a time, in varying applications. I've been known to have 20 files open at a time. I'm working on that. Really.

      But I've got a gig of ram and a fast computer.

      Anyway, regarding files, I get a lot of documents e-mailed to me, and I recently made the mistake of downloading a lot of them directly to my desktop -- which, admittedly is probably wrong -- rather than downloading them directly into a file system. So I'm now trying to get them all moved into different files, based on topics; those files also are on my desktop.

      I use Konqueror to move the docs from the desktop to the files. That's when the trouble starts, and the response starts getting really slow. I'll be moving the files around on my desktop to tidy it up and a crash will occur and when I restart my computer all the files are there again, on the desktop! When I look in the files, I see the docs are there, too, and the copies still on the desktop can't be opened. So it's like some sort of ghost file. Even when I click the little red "X" on the files to make them disappear they'll come back the next time something happens to the computer, such as a crash.

      Does any of this make sense? Or have I managed to cause some terrible hiccup?

        Could it be that permissions are not set correctly? Could you please let us know where you are moving these files to?

        If you stay within your own home directory (/home/your_username) and you are still having problems please open a shell and post the output of "ls -la"

          I'm moving the documents from just sitting on the desktop to file folders which also are on my desktop (home/username/Desktop/file name). Does that make sense? Am I still in my home directory?

            In that case could you please open a shell (command line), go to your desktop, type "ls -la" and post the output. Oh, and I take it you are logged in as yourself, not root. Please also post the output of "whoami" just to make sure

              OK, in addition to what toad says, which is good advice, this suggests to me that there is some stress happening to the system (a bottleneck somewhere). With a gig of RAM and a fast CPU, opening 20 files and moving them should not, by itself, be a crash-causer.

              A quick way to see what is sucking up all the resources is to first open the Konsole and run

              and then move that window down to the corner where you can watch it while you start your mad file-opening and copying routine. You will observe one specific process on top of the list beginning to use more and more CPU resources -- what is the name of that process? If I were a betting person, I'd lay $5 on "xorg".

                I had a similar problem once when fstab was not mounting my swap file. Make sure it is mounted. You can check this by opening System Settings>Advanced>Disks and File systems and see if the swap file is enabled.

                    Regarding what Detonate suggested, I went to System Settings, Advanced, but can't find anything about disks and files. So maybe something is missing?

                        In the Konsole,
                        Code:
                        sudo fdisk -lu
                        will show the partitions and filesystem types -- look for one described as "swap". Also
                        Code:
                        sudo swapon -s
                        will show swap usage by device.

                          Yep, thanks for posting the ls -la output - everything seems to be OK there. Go with Detonate's suggestion and dibl's commands

                            OK, will do. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks to all of you for your help. Denotate's screen shots look nothing like mine -- I'll post a screen shot of my own as soon as I an figure out how to. I'm really not entirely useless -- honest!

                              Impossible, Detonate is opening System Settings which can be opened from KMenu, and you should click the tab Advance -as Detonate has said.
