Please help me with audio problem.

    This is my laptop: http://b2b.sony.com/Solutions/b2b/da...15b4aad33c.pdf

Ok, here's the jist. I installed Ubuntu, during the installation i had to disable acpi fo rit to install. Once it was installed i was having major problems with playing video and my audio was stuttering horribly. So after a couple hours of googling and playing with pulseaudio and my video driver i was able to play video but the stuttering problem was still there. I found out this was a wide spread issue with Ubuntu, so i formatted and installed Kubuntu. During the installation i had to do the same thing, disable acpi for it to install (acpi shouldn't be related to the audio problem, i just thought it was worth mentioning) and when i booted up everything was running smooth. I didn't have to tinker around with my video properties in order to get it running. But when i tried playing a video there was no sound and when i tried playing just an audio file it stutters forribly. I googled around a bit more but i can't seem to find a solution. I've tried setting everything to ASLA audio, i'v tried using different media players, i've tried setting the audio to different channels all to no avail. What is my problem? Do i need new drivers? If i do where can i get them? I'm pretty nooby with linux atm so detailed fixes would be very appreciated.

So to sum things up the main problem i am having right now is when i play mp3's or any other audio file the sound stutters/freezes until i restart and when i play a video file i have good video but no audio.

    Welcome.
That pdf doesn't give much info on the audio for that laptop huh?
in a terminal, do a sudo lshw and copy what it says about your audio and post it back here.
(you might have to install lshw first from Adept)

Re: Please help me with audio problem.

KDE 3.5 in Kmenu >System >Adept pacakge manager. do a search for lshw. check it then click full upgrade, then apply changes. (if I remember right)
After that is installed open Konsole and type sudo lshw, enter password (cursor will not move), then hit enter. It will give you all of your hardware info. Copy and paste the section for your audio device here in the forum.

ok, a quick search on the ALSA sight yielded this..
            http://www.alsa-project.org/main/ind...odule-intel8x0

also, a couple quick questions... which version of Kubuntu are you running?
After you installed did you run the updates? Sometimes doing this will solve some smaller issues.
in Adept, fetch updates and do a full upgrade to install all upgraded packages.
If that does not help with the audio, try the link I gave to the Alsa site.

              I'm running 8.04

In adept it won't allow me highlight/click full upgrade, but i did update right after install so that might be the issue. I'm gonna give the Alsa site a try, it's confusing, but that's not gonna stop me from trying...

Re: Please help me with audio problem.

With the version of Adept you are using you have to click on Fetch Updates first, then if there are any updates or upgrades you will be able to click on the full upgrade.
You can also run updates and upgrades from the command line, which some people actually prefer.
In Konsole type sudo apt-get update, enter password. Then do sudo apt-get upgrade.

from what I can tell, there have been bug reports on the audio device you have.
But the Alsa site should help. Everything appears to be done from the command line in Konsole.
Good luck, and if you have anymore issues just post back here.

Sorry its taken soo long to respond, i had to go to class. I ran the command and it seems my PC was already up to date. I started to try and use the Asla guide but it seems the commands don't work and i don't know exactly which ones i should be suing. I'll keep trying though...

Edit: I keep getting an "access denied" error when i try to create a new directory (either manually or via command) in usr/src folder.

are you running 64 or 32 bit Kubuntu?

                      32bit

Also, i figured out i needed to type sudo before everything in order to use admin privileges, but even doing this i can only make the alsa dir. Allt he steps after that don't work. Is there a way someone can just make the folder and i can just paste it in my /usr/src/ dir?

Re: Please help me with audio problem.

in Adept, do a search for Alsa and check that you have the lib32asound2 (for 32bit) installed.
you can look through all of the Alsa programs, make sure you have the alsa-base and linux-sound-base

if none of this helps and that link I provided does not help, it might be better to switch from Alsa to Pulseaudio-esound

Thanks, i'll try these solutions. On another note is there any other destro that is proven to be working with my specs? I'd be more then willing to install a different one if that's the case.

not sure about another distro. There are so many of them. If you want to check out some others you can go to www.distrowatch.com and check out the different distro's in there.

just to be sure though, check out this link and see if there is anything in there that helps.

it might be something simple like just installing the alsa oss package for backward comptability.
I will keep searching to see if I can find anything else.
