Quake4 libSDL drama

Have only a little Linux experience first time kubuntu user though having major dramas trying to get Quake4 up n running though.
During install gets errors
gdk warning **:locale not supported by xlib,locale set to c
gdk warning **:can not set locale modifiers
install still runs though
on boot up get the libSDL.oo.0 not available type errors have tried various how tos such as http://fatooh.org/q4howto/
still getting same libSDL faults
Dont wanna do a chroot if I can avoid it
can anyone help

I guess your using 64-bit kubuntu... if so download this 32-bit version of libSDL & extract it like so..
$ sudo dpkg -X libsdl1.2debian-oss_1.2.7+1.2.8cvs20041007-3ubuntu4_i386.deb /tmp
and copy the libSDL-1.2.so.0 file to your Q4 dir...
$ sudo cp /tmp/usr/lib/libSDL-1.2.so.0 /usr/local/games/quake4/libSDL-1.2.so.0
and remove the tmp files..
$ sudo rm -r /tmp/usr/

With any luck it should run fine now.

Champion thanks for that problem sorted.
Had some openGL errors but reinstalled nvidia drivers with 32-bit compat libs and worked fine.
Quake 4 rocks under linux AMD64 lovin it.
Think I should have actually installed 32bit libs under /usr/lib32 so will try that now
your help much appreciated though.

Just dont believe this stuffed up n had to reload system coz I didn't know how to fix it.
Tried this again to install quake &&&&&& not working.
Even tried to reinstall quake still wont work libSDL is there quake just doesnt see it.
Installed libs using Stormbringers method this time not sure if this has anything to do with it
Can i link the file to quake in the startup script maybe.?
Starting to think AMD64 linux is just 2 flaky, gotta try though.

recopied libSDL now it works, dont get it dont know going to go fragg stroggs so dont care !!!!!

New problem now I think quake is crashing x, each time after installing quake an I reboot kdm starts when I go to log in monitor momentarily goes off then comes back on at login screen. Tried changin xorg.conf back to nv but doesn't cure problem will try to post logs to give more info posting from winXP at the mo. Anyone got any ideas though? is the k8 kernel as stable as amd_generic ? sure the log siad something about cyrilic fonts when this happened last but I reinstalled and has happened again will try to copy logs an post asap

okay logged back in under root/recovery mod thingo
found a couple of errors on my part ie.keyboard configured wrong and
had not #ed out glcore or load dri in my xorg.conf
have now done this and sorted out keyboard by dpkg-reconfigure
still have same endless loop at login though
apt-get updated upgraded hoping that may sort problem no such luck
in recovery mode glxgears glxinfo look good can post them too if this would help
just reinstalled kdm via synaptic maybe that will help
any suggestions appreciated can post any other required logs if it would help
(u may have to explain how to get em though)
