Can you save downloads for reinstallation?

I'm about to install Kubuntu. Unfortunately it comes with very little software, so I'm going to have to download things like subversion, Japanese support and some applications.

My problem is that anything more than a couple of meg will be a slow download (since my kids invariably chew up my monthly broadband limit in no time). I would like to save these downloads on a CD so that if I have to reinstall Kubuntu, I won't have to download them all again.

Can anyone explain how to install this kind of stuff, what files I need to save on a CD, and how to reinstall them if necessary from the CD. Sorry for the big list of questions but I'm kinda new to Kubuntu...

Or if you can point me to where I can find this out for myself that would be appreciated as well.

Huh? Mine says 26,058 packages available in the standard repos, including subversion and language-pack-kde-ja-base and language-pack-kde-ja for Japanese -- which Kubuntu are you referring to?

      8.04

Go to the start menu and you'll see very little there. Try typing "svn" and it'll say you have to install subversion.

Compare my current computer which has Fedora 4 and came with heaps of software already installed. Of course it came with 4 CDs instead of 1, and most of it I don't use.

Ahhh. Yes, there is not a lot of software automatically installed at the time you install Kubuntu, out of consideration for folks who have limited disk space and requirements. But it is all there in the repositories.

KMenu>System>Adept Manager is where you choose your packages for installation. Subversion is there, along with the language packs. Just mark them for installation, and "Apply".

What I would like to do, if possible, is to save what gets downloaded on a CD in such a way that I can reinstall it from a fresh Kubuntu install without internet access.

          Is that possible?

I think you probably need to get the installation DVD, which has all the packages as of the date of release of the DVD. A quick check at Kubuntu.org indicates it has to be purchased -- I don't see a download image site listed. But there have been some problems reported on the forum regarding burned DVD images, so there must be a download site for it somewhere. Sorry -- I haven't done that and can't give the details. If you find the DVD installation ISO for downloading, make sure you check the md5 sum and burn it slowly to a good blank media.

downloaded packages go into /var/cache/apt/archives (unused packs get cleaned from time to time - every 30days if i remember correctly)

there is an app in the repos named aptoncd which scans that dir and any other you choose and creates a cd/dvd; had some bugs lately but may be worth a shot

or you could just copy the contents to another dir or dvd and use dpkg for a mass install (that way i think it may get the dependencies as well)

I found one download site for the Kubuntu 8.04 DVD, which may or may not be very fast, depending on where you live:

                  http://nginyang.uvt.nl/kubuntu/
