I'm trying to get rid of Kubuntu...

I bought this computer from my room-mate, who is much more of a computer guy than I am. I don't know how to work this OS and I don't really like it.

So, I'm trying to install Windows. Mostly so I can play games that won't seem to work with Kubuntu. How can I install Windows? It won't boot to disk and I can't figure it out.

    Help me.

Try looking in the BIOS, there should be an option somewhere to set the boot order. Put the CD drive first. Then put the Windows CD in and reboot. You might need to tell the installer to delete the Linux partitions.

An aside: Two tech guys are talking. The first says, "Did you know? If you play a Windows install CD backwards, it plays satanic messages!" The other replies, "That's nothing - if you play it forwards, it installs Windows!"

Seriously, though, Kubuntu is different to Windows, but that doesn't make it bad. Give it a try! Mind you, I still have a copy of XP installed mostly for those games that don't yet run on Linux (though their number is decreasing).

This may be a stupid question, but how do I get to the BIOS?

I've been using Kubuntu since my room-mate moved out, but I just don't have the time to learn how to use it.

Good joke, by the way. XD

Depending on your system, press Del, F2, F12 etc. at the very start of the boot - before any Linux/Windows/whatever.

Re: I'm trying to get rid of Kubuntu...

Okay. So, I managed to get both kubuntu and Windows 98 working on my PC. Now I have another problem.

For some reason Windows only has 16 colours and I need 256 colours to run anything, including the software to install DSL. I can access the internet from kubuntu though.

So my question is... how can I get the drivers I need to download from kubuntu to the Windows partition?

Re: I'm trying to get rid of Kubuntu...

You cannot use the Kubuntu drivers on the Windows installation, you'll have to get drivers that was written specifically for Windows, usually from the video card manufacturer.

The two operating systems are completely seperate and does not have anything to do with each other, and drivers / programs are not transferable between the two. Linux (Kubuntu) does have some specialized software that allows you to run some Windows software on it, but Windows does not have anything that allows Kubuntu software to run on it as far as i know.

Drivers are mutually exclusive. You'll have to speak to someone on a Windows support forum for that.

In your case you'll have to download the driver from the net using kubuntu and write them to something (CD?), boot Windows and read the drivers from the media they were written to. Ask your roommate's help, he might be able to help you write the drivers to the hard disk / usb media so that is it accesible from windows once you have rebooted into windows

            Good luck

Win98... That uses a fat32 partition, right? You should be able to copy the files directly over from Kubuntu, if you tell it where the partition is. Find out how: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=1865.0

                Just my 2 cents James.........

ditch 98.......supported it for 3 years (read pain), and use Linux.........

                    referring to reply #4

you don't think of this DSL aren't you ?

BTW JamesM is right. Give it a try!! You might than be already prepared to say
Vista? I don't care about Vista!! Asta La Vista B... Vista!!!

at least this is the reason I familiarize with (K)ubuntu............ the more since

Willie Gates III, has made some unpro comments on the OLPC project

It seems to me, as he and his staff are seriously frightened by this scenario, that a third (don't take it literally) of the World will use Linux instead Win-XP or so.

Re: I'm trying to get rid of Kubuntu...

Nice. Everything seems to be working all right with Kubuntu, though I can't say that much for Windows 98. Full of holes. Drivers are messed up. Eh.

One small question now. Kaffeine won't play anything. Last time I set Kubuntu up, I figured out how to get it to play. I believe I used the xine engine. But now I can't seem to do it. I followed tha Kaffeine handbook which told me to download some codecs from a site and copy the files to /user/lib/win32.

Not working out for me. I can't seem to copy them anywhere, not to mention there is no /user/lib/win32 and when I try to create it I'm told that I don't have permission.

I also tried looking for it in Adept, but no luck.

                      Any ideas?

Use http://kudos.berlios.de/kf/kf1.html it will solve most kubuntu questions.

Also try to read the sticky in this forum topic.

All right. I read through everything you gave me. Doesn't help much considering I'm not Linux savvy. I don't understand half of what the instructions are asking me to do. I just need a simple explanation on how to get the xine engine for Kaffeine to work. It's not in my package manager and I don't know how to get it in there.

If anyone would like to help me with this, I would be eternally appreciative.

Have you followed the directions on the above link to download the codecs / Xine?

Yeah. Now I just have a zip file sitting on my desktop and have no idea what to do with it.
