Hi there, I am another complete muppet and am trying to get into kubuntu, because i dont like vista but im having some issues similar to regulataoath.
cant get wireless to work, and also cant get my video drivers sussed.

    I have a hp dv51011ea with geforce 9600m gt,
i installed hardy heron release of kubuntu a couple of days ago.
i dont know squat about konsole use either Sad
which nvidia driver do i need, and how do i get my wireless up and running.

Does Nvidia appear in Kmenu>Stystem>Hardware Drivers Manager?

If it does then tick the box, wait a while for it to install the correct driver and reboot

      Regarding Wireless
You first have to determine your wireless card and driver needed.
      in a Konsole
      Code:
      lshw -C network
      and post back..
For security reasons obliterate/change the MacAddresses
      listed as
      serial: xxxxxxx
Depending on the card you may have to run a ndiswrapper
      Here is one example

          Nvidia

I had 8.04. I first missed the point of Hardware Drivers Manager. I tried Albert Milone's script "Envy" - http://www.albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html and I tried installing from the Nvidia site, neither worked. I got so messed up with Nvidia...

I later caught on to Hardware Drivers Manager. I did a complete reinstall - 8.04.1 . The first thing I did was to tick the box, it installed the driver and I rebooted. Success!

          Wireless

Your first post here at the very top identifies your wireless card as "Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link 5100" I responded to this in "Wireless help" below (cross posting!!!)

          Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link 5100

Still looks like a work in progress. But look at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=879134&page=7 post#62

              Wireless
Just use your Windows version of the WiFi Drivers with ndiswrapper.
The Win Wifi drivers should be on the driver disk that came with your machine's Win Install.
Download with Synaptic or apt-get the ndiswrapper package.
              Then follow the how to.
