Can't play DVD

I have tried everything to get Kaffeine to play my DVD but it gives me the following error (in pic).

DVDs have protected codecs so Kafeine is bound by the rules. But there is a very nice HOwto on this forum:

3. Add the needed repositories if not already added, according to your version of *ubuntu, per the following instructions:

Kubuntu 8.04 "Hardy Heron":
sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/hardy.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list




When I do what step 3 says I get this from the Konsole:

This means that you have Adept, or another instance of apt-get running. Try shutting down all other windows and then running the command again.

It ran but kaffeine will not play a dvd. I still get the error message.

What did it report? Is it installed?

kubuntu-restricted-extras holds several different codecs. Is that installed?

I find that the most robust player is VLC. Is that installed and can that play the DVD?

Use the "VCD" button instead.
This will prompt you....to load that 'missing libdvdcss2' codec.
just follow the prompts.

The default video player for Hardy is Kaffeine, and the version included is 0.8.6. Well, I must say that on other distributions Kaffeine is pretty stable, but on the Kubuntu Live CD at least it's just unusable. Here's why: in Kubuntu, Kaffeine includes an addition which is supposed to automatically download the proprietary codecs and libdvdcss2. Which doesn't work. Moreover, after installing kubuntu-restricted-extras, libdvdcss2 and w32codecs, Kaffeine will still try to download the codecs and pop up an error that the codecs are already installed. Otherwise, it enters an infinite loop. I didn't have the occasion to test it normally, after installing it on a hard disk, but running it from the Live CD just won't work. The only workaround I could found is to right click on the movie in Konqueror and open it in a new tab, using kaffeine-part, which will work but the fullscreen mode won't be actually fullscreen.

Getting dvd's to play can be difficult.
I found that my dvd player needs a region set, some do not.
There is plenty of info on kubuntu forums. Use the search in kubuntu forums and see what's available
