Re: Can't play DVD
Hope is near:-)
DVDs have protected codecs so Kafeine is bound by the rules. But there is a very nice HOwto on this forum:

Re: Can't play DVD
3. Add the needed repositories if not already added, according to your version of *ubuntu, per the following instructions:
Kubuntu 8.04 "Hardy Heron":
sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/hardy.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list
When I do what step 3 says I get this from the Konsole:
O- | sudo apt-key add - && sudo apt-get update
OK

Re: Can't play DVD
I ran it but I still can't play a DVD.
kubuntu-restricted-extras holds several different codecs. Is that installed?
I find that the most robust player is VLC. Is that installed and can that play the DVD?"A problem well stated is a problem half solved." --Charles F. Kettering

Re: Can't play DVD
The default video player for Hardy is Kaffeine, and the version included is 0.8.6. Well, I must say that on other distributions Kaffeine is pretty stable, but on the Kubuntu Live CD at least it's just unusable. Here's why: in Kubuntu, Kaffeine includes an addition which is supposed to automatically download the proprietary codecs and libdvdcss2. Which doesn't work. Moreover, after installing kubuntu-restricted-extras, libdvdcss2 and w32codecs, Kaffeine will still try to download the codecs and pop up an error that the codecs are already installed. Otherwise, it enters an infinite loop. I didn't have the occasion to test it normally, after installing it on a hard disk, but running it from the Live CD just won't work. The only workaround I could found is to right click on the movie in Konqueror and open it in a new tab, using kaffeine-part, which will work but the fullscreen mode won't be actually fullscreen."A problem well stated is a problem half solved." --Charles F. Getting dvd's to play can be difficult.
I found that my dvd player needs a region set, some do not.
There is plenty of info on kubuntu forums. Use the search in kubuntu forums and see what's available
