I downloaded and installed the rar utility listed in "add remove" programs. Where is it on the system ?

rar is a command line utility, you can read about it's usage with the command 'man rar' (in a console)

In addition, most GUI archiving tools (like Ark) should be able to use the 'rar' program to create/extract rar archives once you've installed it.

Lame, I couldn't get rar to work with ark, so I just installed winrar with wine, it worked great for me!
