    Need help on getting sound

Two days into getting Kubuntu Hardy Heron up and running since removing VISTA.

One of my problems after installation is that I have no sound.

Amarok acts like it is playing a CD right now, but there is no sound. There is no sound when I boot up or shut down or anything else at the desktop. I checked everywhere to make sure volume is max and no mute on.

The only information I know is:

    thyme@gedolidohi:~$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: STAC92xx Analog [STAC92xx Analog]
    Subdevices: 0/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: STAC92xx Digital [STAC92xx Digital]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 20
    Memory at fe9fc000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]

I have no idea where to begin with this. I hope someone can advise.

    Thank you,

    Follow the guidance linked here:

It sounds like you need to add the snd-hda-intel module to /etc/modules.

Thank you for responding. I have been distracted with an intermittent working CD/DVD drive. I had inadvertently deleted Dell diagnostics on the harddrive when I installed Kubuntu. However I did manage to get the CD drive recognized once, then ran Dell diagnostic tests from CD which failed. A couple of hours with Dell Support with reseating the drive and all worked. Now it is failing again. Support says that since I installed Kubuntu, I do not get support except for hardware and they think if I have problems with the CD drive it is because of Linux OS (which is not supported under my contract... sigh...)

Anyway, I will hunt around to find out HOW I do what you suggest I accomplish. Then back to CD drive problem.

      Again, thanks.

Re: Need help on getting sound

Hi, there. I am sure learning Linux (Kubuntu) through these problems...

Using the link you provided I checked about my sound. The module is listed and I can change the settings with the alsamixer. The 'front' was muted, but changing it did not give me sound. 'PCM' was set low, but increasing it did not give me sound, either.

I checked if I had permissions with the grep command. It shows me as the user.

So I am not sure what else I am supposed to do to get sound. Any other advice or leads?

        Thanks in advance,
        Thyme

Re: Need help on getting sound

After checking Ubuntu Forum I found my solution.

          sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils reset

          Then reboot.

          I now have sound.
