Hi everyone,
I have tried adding several servers recently by going into Adept package manager and hitting the Edit Software Sources button down at the bottom of the window, then going into the Third-Party Software tab and adding a server from there. The ones I have added are:
deb http://www.opensourcemirrors.org/ubuntu hardy main universe
deb http://ubuntu.secs.oakland.edu hardy main universe
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/probono/ubuntu hardy main
I am pretty sure that all of these are working, but adept is still not updating my package list. I am trying to install the celementtree package and I know it exists on both the http://www.opensourcemirrors.org, and http://ubuntu.secs.oakland.edu servers but it will not show up when I type the package name into the search bar at the top of adept. Nor will it show up if I go into Konsole and type in sudo apt-get install celementtree. It says the package does not exist.
The other thing that is bothering me is that I am unsure of whether Adept is updating the package database after I have added servers. I get a lot of errors when I type sudo apt-get update. And if I try to update within Adept it ALWAYS tells me:
"Another process is using the packaging system database (probably some other Adept application or apt-get or aptitude).
Would you like to attempt to resolve this problem? No will enter read-only mode and Cancel to quit and resolve this issue yourself."
So I try hitting no and of course it runs through the list of servers and downloads the sources.list or whatever it needs to get successfully. But then when I search again in Adept, none of the packages that should be there are there! So I try hitting Yes on the dialog that tells me the package database is locked and I get another pop up error that says:
"There was an error commiting changes. Possibly there was a problem downloading some packages or the commit would break packages."
What gives? This shows up right when adept starts the batch update process. There is also another dialog box behind this one with another error saying that Adept failed to unlock the database.
Of course the Adept Installer window is running in the background while I am updating my sources, but if I close that window, the "Software Sources" window closes too.
I don't get it. Why can't I update my sources and add the new packages into my package database?
Thank you for any help!
Graham
