Massive Font size after installation

hi, i've just installed kubuntu for the first time on my laptop. I've had the problem that during the installation the font size in the dialog boxes was huge which made them take up the whole screen. After blindly finding my way through the installation i now have the same problem with the menu on the bottom left and menus that pop up when i right click.

I would look for a setting to change but the font is so big i cant read any of the menus. I'm pretty sure its not the resolution because the desktop looks fine before i open a menu.

Please help!!

I got this unhealthy interest in your screen dpi :P
what does the following command show:

xdpyinfo | grep "resolution"

(it's ok you don't have to answer)
