Are you certain there are no settings that simply needs changing, like I had to do in windows when connecting to a tv? I have tried to make changes in system settings-> monitor and display-> hardware. This did me no good, but it could be I simply did it wrong.

Unfortunately, there is no tight integration between the AMD/ATI drivers and the settings in KDE's control centre. The advanced settings such a cloning the display or setting the overlay parameters must be done in the proprietary Catalyst Control Centre.
