My computer is a HP compaq nx7000 laptop

The projector is something that seems to be called "ASK C105"

It has been interesting looking into this. Have a look at http://www.nabble.com/Projectors-on-...d18070902.html , particularly the first response from Gilles Gravier.

It looks like you treat it as an external monitor - either a single or dual monitor and this can be different depending on your graphics card.

Thank you, Arochester. Your link provided me with at least a partial solution. The shell-prompt solution worked. Nevertheless, I still cannot project images from kaffeine. I would like to at least be able to watch movies and stuff. No fault of yours, of course. :-)

This phenomena is of course known to me from windows, where you had to choose whether you wanted the image displayed on computer screen, or external screen. (I used to connect to my TV by S-video)
I don't know how to do the switch in Kubuntu, though.

Depending on where you bought it from, laptops tend to have differences. The U.S one has ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 Graphics doing it's displaying for it.

Now I'm a total noob when it comes to kubuntu too, and I too connect to a secondary video output (TV via svideo) and originally experienced problems with it. However, I got mine working allmost the way I like it (just one little gripe that I haven't yet figured out) after I installed EnvyNG (found in the repositories).

The thing is though, I have an nVidia card so this might not work at all for you, but for me, it first asks if I want to install ATI or nVidia drivers (with a few options, I took the suggested one). I do that and find myself with "NVIDIA X Server Settings" utility in kmeanu/settings where I can, after a bit of fiddling around, clone my monitor to the TV and watch all media thru that (I'd prefer if kaffeine would simply take over the tv-out when it starts, like VLC did/does under my windows installation... I've yet to try VLC in kubuntu since otherwise I've been *very* happy with kaffeine).
Before I did the EnvyNG installation, I didn't have access to the utility in settings and I couldn't (or rather didn't figure out...) how to change the settings in "kmenu/system settings", but after envy, it's all good.

Now this might not work for you, but since Envy does give the option to install ATI drivers as well, it might be worth a try.

Wow, haven't used kubuntu for more than a week, and I'm allready giving advice. People wiser than me, please nuke me if what I've said here is useless for reasons beyond my understanding...

I tried installing vlc( haven't done so before for the same reason as you) but it did no good. No I figured I'd try envy, but I am uncertain of how many packages to install. There is quite a few envy-related packages in the repositories.

Install the medibuntu repository. Install kubuntu-restricted-extras. Make sure you have libdvdcss2 and possibly w32codecs.

Those are already in place, long ago. I am perfectly able to watch video on my computer, the trouble lies in getting an image through the projector. All I get is a big, black square, where the movies should be.

Well...yes. Otherwise the perfectly fine screen-image of everything else but video content would be really difficult to explain.

What graphics card do you have?

It sounds like the overlay is only displaying on one monitor (your main one). This is a limitation of some very old graphics chips, but if your computer isn't really old then it should be a matter of the correct configuration (setting it up to clone your main display).

For envy (if you're running hardy), just install

envyng-core

and run it from the terminal as

envyng -t

(this is text mode). The other envy packages are the GUIs and are not really necessary.

My graphics card is ATI mobility radeon 9200.

I ran # envyng -t as advised, installed the latest driver manual, and found upon reboot that my graphics were shot. Configuring only gave options for very low graphics. I then rebooted into recovery mode, and chose the "fix x-server" option. Proceeding the normal boot then gave me my graphics back, like it was before.
Where this leaves me, I am still not sure.

Well....I have tried turning on my projector again, with no different result. My Kmenu displays a function called ATI catalyst control center, which gives me the error message:"There was a problem initializing Catalyst Control Center Linux edition. It could be caused by the following; No Ati graphics driver is installed, or the Ati driver is not functioning properly.
Please install the Ati driver appropriate for you Ati hardware, or configure using aticonfig."

hmm.

I think what happened is that you installed the fglrx driver (AIT's binary driver), then disabled it when you did 'fix x-server'.
I would try running

sudo aticonfig --initial

and rebooting. your graphics will probably be 'shot' again, but going to the ATI catalyst control center in your menu should be able to adjust the graphics correctly..
