    Help

Installed 8.04 and everything was working except the sound. Followed Ubuntu sound guide and to start it showed my sound card which is an on board ALC883 on ASUS M2N-VM HDMI board. After messing around with the guide on Ubuntu forum and for some daft reason later trying to dump ALSA for OSS I am now worse off than I was before. Amarok throws the xIne cannot initialise drivers message up. Alsamixer wont run..and now aplay -l is saying no soundcard found. I am at my wits end and need help..and please do not suggest the Ubuntu guide....... I am I must add very impressed with LInux except for the current woes.

    Re: Help

When you say "dumped ALSA", what does that mean? Does
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install alsa-base
help? Do you need to put a new/replacement line in /etc/modules to show the appropriate module name?

        Re: Help

Ooops, sorry it is a file, not a folder. It shows kernel modules that were not automatically installed.

Three or four posts down this thread appears to be some possible help for you:

          Re: Help

Still in turmoil here I am afraid. Major problem being I am not picking up the soundcard.
result of aplay - l = aplay: device_list:205: no soundcards found...

If I boot from Live CD it gets picked up so it is there. Need somebody who is clued up at the very base level here.

                Re: Help

It's not obvious what the problem is there. The sound chip is listed on the PCI bus, so we know the Linux OS sees it:

00:07.0 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP67 High Definition Audio (rev a1)
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Unknown device 8230
Flags: bus master, 66MHz, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 11
                Memory at dfef8000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Since the OS knows about the sound system, there's either a problem with the driver installation, or a problem configuring the channels and volume settings.

I would search Ubuntu forum with "mcp67 hda" - that should bring up many instances, assuming that other folks are using the same motherboard.

                  Re: Help

I came to the conclusion that the onboard sound wasnt going to work because there was no driver for a 64bit installation. So off to the puter shoppe I go and get a soundcard which depicts on lspci -v as CMI8738....
THATS GREAT......only I am still stuck with the "no soundcard found" when I type aplay -l...................

I have followed the guide on ubuntu forum and still I have the same problem, Now being a beginner I dont know much of how this beast works but I am thinking something somewhere in the startup..a config file or something isnt there or if it is its screwed up. What do you think o wise ones ?
And yes I have disabled my onboard sound before some wiseguy asks

                  thanks

                    Re: Help

It is possible that there's no 64-bit driver for that chipset. Did you review everything about it on the ALSA project page?

                    http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Main_Page

If you're going to buy a sound card, make sure you've checked it on the ALSA site -- then you should be good to go.

                      Re: Help

You should check in your BIOS whether the onboard card is enabled. If so, disable it and try again.
