    Screen resolution problem

Reading a thread here, conserning among other thing screen resolution, I decided to make my display make things a bit bigger. I entered System Settings->monitor and display, and turned resolution down one notch. So far, so good. I can now read the screen while leaning back and putting my feet on the table.
This morning, however, when I turn on my computer, things are different. Everything is huge! I enter the displaysettings manager, to turn up resolution again, but no can do. Resolution is set on 640x480, with no option to change it. I log out of my 3.5.9 session, and into 4.1. Settings-manager here is different, but still no option to change resolution. The current resolution is set as auto. So I wonder; "Is my graphics shot, or something?" I reboot into a live-cd. Resolution is at max, as it should be, so graphics work.
Rebooting yet again, I still cannot find a way to increase resolution. What the heck is going on here, and how do I fix it?

    Re: Screen resolution problem

Well. I rebooted again, into recovery mode. Chose "try to fix x-server", and bingo, screen resolution is set to max. Unfortunately, this left writing so small as to be unreadable, so I have once again turned resolution down one notch, and am back to square one. Can't wait to see what happens on next login.

are you using Nvidia, if so you can download envy-ng

      sudo apt-get install envy-ng

then use the nvidia control panel

your video settings are set in this file

        /etc/X11/xorg.conf

so if you go into the terminal and type "cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf" what ever that says is what you will get when you reboot.

when you change something in a control panel, make sure you save it because if your xorg.conf file isn't being updated it will go back to how it was.

I suggest you ensure you are a power user before changing settings.

I don't use Nvidia, my graphics card is an ATI mobility radeon 9200. I will do a reboot to see what happens.

Restarted my computer, and everything went well. Resolution is the same as before. Seem the X-server went on the fritz somehow. Silly thing....
