I know Ubuntu does, but does Kubuntu automatically install GRUB for it's bootloader?

Yes.
I think the alternate install CD's give you an option to skip or modify GRUB installation (at least they used to), but the regular install/live CD's should install grub automagically (although it's been a while since I used one)

In the options for disk partitioning, there is an advanced menu which allows you to uncheck the grub install option.

Does it also allow you to install grub somewhere else than mbr?HP Pavilion dv6 core i7 (Main)

Live Kubuntu installer CD
Step 4: Choose the Manual method (for partitioning)
Step 6: Advanced button at lower right.
There you can specify where to put GRUB, as these guys have said.
But be prepared: know where you want it, in GRUB notation (hdx,y).
The default is (hd0) which is the Master Boot Record of the BIOS first boot drive (where most people put GRUB).
Then come back to Step 6 and click Finish.
