        Re: Kubuntu Won't Install

Okay, so that "I" understand correctly, when you opt for the first menu item - "Start or Install Kubuntu" - you end up at a command line prompt - ubuntu@ubuntu:~$:

If you press F6 - Other Options - you can edit the kernel entry. Remove the quite and splash options and then return/continue. This will allow you to see the boot messages. Assuming the process still fails, what are the last few messages that are displayed?

          Re: Kubuntu Won't Install

The start up screen I have is just like yours only the menu items are:

Try Kubuntu without any change to your comuter
          Install Kubuntu
          Check CD for defects
          Test Memory
          Boot from first hard disk

I get the command line prompt when I select “Try Kubuntu without any change to your comuter”

When I press F6 I get a command line prompt that says:

          Boot Options: file=/cdrom/preseed/kubuntu.seed boot=casper initrd=/casper/initrd.gz quiet splash --|

When I press F6 a second time I get a pop up menu with the options:

          acpi=off
          noapic
          nolapic
          edd=on
          free software only

And if I select one of them I get a little “X” beside the menu item.

When I run with the quiet and splash options off the last error messages I get are:

The message output you posted will be helpful. Others with more experience with ATI cards and SCSI HD issues may be able to suggest additional things to try. For the benefit of all, exactly what are the exact specifications of your laptop? Size of HD, amount of RAM, ...

                Re: Kubuntu Won't Install

The error messages are not always the same. I tried it again and got this:

                [236.696231] usb 6-4: device descriptor read/64, error -110
                [252.050879] usb 6-4: device descriptor read/64, error -110
                [267.293593] usb 6-4: device descriptor read/64, error -110

[288.472681] usb 6-4: device not accepting address 3, error -110
[288.476713] Buffer I/O error on device sdb1, logical block 0
[288.476793] Buffer I/O error on device sdb1, logical block 1
[288.476848] Buffer I/O error on device sdb1, logical block 2
[288.476901] Buffer I/O error on device sdb1, logical block 3
[288.476984] Buffer I/O error on device sdb1, logical block 0
                [303.723381] usb 6-4: device descriptor read/64, error -110
                [318.966095] usb 6-4: device descriptor read/64, error -110
                [334.320739] usb 6-4: device descriptor read/64, error -110
                [349.563453] usb 6-4: device descriptor read/64, error -110
                [360.204966] usb 6-4: device descriptor read/64, error -110

I think it may be my ATI card because i got and error message early on that said somthing about graphics...... [fail]
it went by too fast for me to write it down though and I have been unable to get that error again.

When I try to boot in safe graphics mode though I don't get any errors. When it come to the point where I would normaly get all the error messages instead I get the command prompt ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ just like when I try to run Kubuntu from the disk only.
Is there a way to boot in safe graphics mode?

                  Re: Kubuntu Won't Install

To me, it seems that those 'errors' are related to.........APCI 'problems'.( More precisely, the BIOS of your laptop.)
I run a Dual-Core AMD 6000+ CPU. (and, this gives me some grief...to start with, too. Until I used the option below,)
Did you, by any chance, try using the Menu (as Kubuntu starts up, from the 'Dual-boot' option)....selecting the 'Start-up' option.... (with APCI problems)?
You have to the count of 10......to ENTER it, using ESC.
I am assuming that your ATI graphics-card is 'in-built'. (Thereby giving you some grief. It most certainly will, being that the 'preferred Graphics-card'..is nVidia....with Linux.)
The 'preferred' Sound is ......Creative Labs.
All three 'faults'....will be more than enough.....to STOP Kubuntu/UbuntuLinux in general....from loading up properly.
