Hey kubuntu forums, today I installed kubuntu 8,04 kde 4,1 but I have problems I want to solve.

    Problem #1.
How do I install the java environment?(1,6)
-Reason I need it is because am now a college student who is learning about java.

    Problem #2.
How do I watch .mkv's and .mkv's with hard subtitles aswell .avi's with hard or soft subtitles.
-Reason I am an anime fan.

    Problem #3.
How do I install firefox 3.0.1, I have tried with the install thing kubuntu has, no success.
-Reason I love firefox more than Konqueror

    Problem #4.
Is 3d acceleration enabled in kubuntu kde 4.1? I can't play openarena or tibia.
    -Reason am a semi gamer.

    Problem #5.
How do I use this compiz fusion thing everyone is talking about and even using?
    -Reason I like eyecandys.

I hope it is okay to do such request for help, I feel dumb when using kubuntu and linux.

    Thanks in advance !

    Hi

1- If you decide to programing Java ( pro ) , i suggest to you
first remove OpenJDK and IcedTea ( not compatible with Glassfish , etc ..)
    Code:
    sudo aptitude remove icedtea-java7-jre icedtea-java7-plugin icedtea-java7-jdk icedtea-gcjwebplugin
and then install Sun JDK 1.6U6 from ubuntu repo

    Code:
    sudo aptitude install sun-java6-bin sun-java6-jdk sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin
    2- I like Smplayer
    try it.

    3-
    Code:
    sudo aptitude install firefox

4- your VGA chip? ATI? NVIDIA? INTEL?

Install mplayer (and smplayer), but don't forget about w32codecs or w64codecs (depending on architecture). Enable medibuntu repositories in adept manager.

Hint - apt-cache search compiz. Easiest way to control display (switching between compiz and kwin) would be fusion-icon. What sort of graphic card do you have? Compiz performance depends heavily on hardware and drivers (hint - use commercial ones for gaming and compiz). You may want to see xorg.conf "Driver" option i "Device" section.

if you are using KDE4.1, then I wouldn't worry about this. KDE4.1 natively supports some of what Compiz offers. Just go to System Settings --> Desktop --> Desktop Effects and Enable Desktop Effects. Then on the Effects tab, you can choose what KDE offers.

Look at my sig bellow. I use Intel Graphic Drivers and I haven't had an issue with games or Desktop Effects.

Fire Fox should be in the Repos. Use Adept Manager to find and install it. You may also want to look at adding the Medibuntu Repo --> https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

Thanks, well I meant to be able play up music as well hear the sound effects from "possible" games when I play them in kubuntu. But I can only either, if I play music first hear the music and no sound effects(I play my own music not the game music) or I don't play any music and I can hear the sound effects.

I found out that I am using kubuntu 8.04 kde 4.0 I, how do I update to the newest version??

                      4. Click "Add" Button"
                      5. Copy and Paste this in the resulting field:
                      Code:
                      deb [url]http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu[/url] hardy main
                      6. Click OK and then Close.
                      7. Exit and Open konsole.
                      8. Copy this:
                      Code:
                      sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
                      9. In konsole paste by pressing Shift-Ins.

Hopefully someone will answer these for you...I wouldn't be the person to help with that as my laptop is still 3.5.9 and I've never had an issue with FlashPlayer.
