Ok im a newbie to linux, ive downloaded a copy of kubuntu but id like to know if i need to check the iso using a checksum to make sure if its the same file it was when it was uploaded

First of all welcome to the party (almost)
Checksum is good prsctice.
One another thing, although maybe outdated:
burn your cd at the lowest possible speed as that can avoid some issues while booting from the CD later on.HP Pavilion dv6 core i7 (Main)

yeh ive read about burning the cd at the lowest speed
I think it is md5, but don't quote me. It has been a while since I installed from a CD.

Anyway, maybe you should change the title to reflect the question more precisely.
