HOW TO COMPLETELY UNINSTALL KDE 4.1 FOR REINSTALLING IT LATER

HELLO!!!!!!! By default I am a Gnome user but recently got attracted by the hype created by KDE 4.1. The new KDE 4.1 looked promising before it started showing its true colours. The new version seems to be a beta version as it is full of glitches AND BUGS.

It is incompatible with Nvidia graphics as well as Compiz/Emerald. My real problem started when I enabled Desktop effects . As soon as I used to log-in ,The KWin used to crash with a message showing fatal error and a link to report this crash.
I even created an account on that bug reporting site but it was not very user friendly website and I lost ,wondering what to do next. Now I can't enable Desktop effects as KWin crashes and Compiz is incompatible.

Now I have decided that I will totally uninstall KDE and will reinstall it again and hope that the problem will not arise again.

PLEASE help and tell me the best way to uninstall kde 4.1.

Yes, that is what I have found, too. I'm staying with it -- I enjoy watching the new software mature. I'm sure the Nvidia driver problem and other bugs will gradually work they way into the updates.

I dunno exactly how to uninstall it -- you've got to get rid of the K Display Manager (KDM) and all of the KDE packages. Did you install it on the same Ubuntu system where you run Gnome? If so, at the KDE login menu, you should be able to select the Gnome session and boot into that.

If you were booted into Gnome, then I would think you could open Synaptic and mark the KDE packages for removal. Basically you need to keep GDM and all your Gnome apps, and get rid of KDM and all the KDE apps.

      About removing

How did you install it ?

By default I am a Gnome user
      Did you use Synaptic ?
If you did -> then you have a list of the installed packages: Synaptic > File > History.

      If you didn't:

Checking installed/updated/removed packages from the dpkg log:

      Recent status log:
      Code:
      grep "status installed" /var/log/dpkg.log
      Code:
      grep upgrade /var/log/dpkg.log
      Code:
      grep remove /var/log/dpkg.log
      A bit older dpkg log:
      Code:
      grep "status installed" /var/log/dpkg.log.1
      Code:
      grep upgrade /var/log/dpkg.log.1
      Code:
      grep remove /var/log/dpkg.log.1
The oldest logs - rotated dpkg logs (packed): dpkg.log.2.gz, dpkg.log.3.gz...

      About KDE4

KDE 4 will need time; so maybe

      KDE 4.0 (alpha)
      KDE 4.1 (beta)
      KDE 4.2 (RC)
      KDE 4.3 (Final)

Re: HOW TO COMPLETELY UNINSTALL KDE 4.1 FOR REINSTALLING IT LATER

I was just wondering if kde 4.1 was good enough to replace my 3.5. I triied several times to use kde 4 and turnet quickly back completelly disgusted but the missing features/bugs etc ...

Hoped at least on 4.1, with what you say i guess i have to wait much longer to see a decent kde .

We already have a "decent" kde. It is kde3.5.9. solid and stable.

Having said that I use kde4.1 about 95% - 98% of the time. It has come a long way since January.

          I can:
-set up my desktop to look and feel exactly like I want it.
          -browse / research the internet.
          -write / answer emails
-write letters / memos / spreadsheets
-organize my time and correlate that over various machines
-access my window shares, run vmware (for (Photoshop, flash, dreamweaver)
-build joomla cms sites locally and on my hosting.
-easily access all my files from the desktop
-setup and run various openbravo ERP's locally and over the net.

while I am doing that I can listen to music and watch movies or TV

Okay, a few things are still missing like:
          -widget installation
-administrator access to the system settings (can be circumnavigated)
and a few details I can't think of right now.

          But they are details.

Edit: luckily I don't use nivdtia cards and don't need prop. drivers
HP Pavilion dv6 core i7 (Main)
          4 GB Ram
          Kubuntu 18.10

Thats exactly the version im using and im happy whit.
            Sorry i should write a decent "kde4.x".

That told i tried to use kde 4 several times ( including 4.0.5 ) but i gave up. that told we are speaking of a second "stable" release that is in fact quite unstable and for a efficient desktop i have to stay in 3.5.9 . Maybe im pretending too much but i give a great importance to the "stable" word, and im displeased by the recent events.

I strongly support this, and I will make my switch from KDE3.5.9 to KDE4.2
