can not get wireless connection working in Kubuntu Hardy

    Hello everybody,

I am using Kubuntu 8.04 and trying to get wireless connection working. I used program Wireless assistant (Kmenu->Interner->Wireless Lan Assistant) and the machine successfully detected available wireless services. I chose one and it said "succesfully connected to ...".

So, I opened Firefox and typed http://www.google.com/. But Firefox could not load the page.
In the Windows partition, the wireless connection works fine.

Could anyone give me insight in how to make wireless work? I would appreciate much.

Thanks in advance for any help.

What wireless device do you have?

Re: can not get wireless connection working in Kubuntu Hardy

In addition to your wireless device info, has your access point assigned you an ip address? If you run ifconfig and do not have "inet addr:192.168.xxx.xxx" (assuming a home wireless) then it sounds like you may not have been given an ip address (I assume you're set up for automatic assignment via dhcp). If that's the case, you should be able to run (as root or using sudo) dhclient eth1 -- replace eth1 with your own device reference: sudo dhclient eth1 is the command.

If you have a static ip address this will not work.

Thanks for your help. But I do have "inet addr:192.168.xxx.xxx". Here is the result of ifconfig:

        --------------

Hi mjtolsma, my wireless device is: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945 ABG Network Connection. THat's why I saw in Network adapters.

I am using Kubuntu 8.04 with KDe 4.1. I tried with KDE 3.5.9 but also could not have wireless work.

One noting thing is that in Kubuntu, InfoCenter, PCI:

        network controller:

        ...
        Capabilities: access denied.

If you need more info, just let me know. Thanks in advance for your help.

Just curious, do you have KNetworkManager in your statusbar? It should be a white rectangle with a red cross in it.
If you don't have that, try (from a console):

          modprobe wlan0_pci

after typing, you shouldn't get a response from the system. So if you see no apparent result, that's normal.

then reboot, go to the KNetworkManager (it should be visible) and your wireless connection should be visible (setup like password etc still need to be completed though).

If this doesn't work, can you go to the internet with a wired connection?

Also, can you give us the contents of your interfaces file?

It is located in /etc/network (file is called interfaces)

              Hi all,

I can connect to the wireless network now.
I did not do anything special, just corrected the interfaces file to point to the static address of my desktop at the office (at work, I have wired internet through a cable connected to my desktop).

              Thanks for all your help.
