Are you running compiz-fusion / enhanced desktop effects?

Leave the number of desktops at 1. Change the Horizontal size to 6, or whatever you want.

I don't have compiz loaded, so that I can't see.
                    For me, it's:
KMenu > System Settings > Desktop > Multiple Settings > fillyerboots
I have six, and they work fine setup in there

                    Good Luck! let me know

                      Re: getting only 2 desktops

                      Two setting changes are required.

                      First:

Right-click on an empty area of your desktop. Select Configure Desktop... > Multiple Desktops and set Number of desktops to 1

                      Second:

Open ccsm and select General Options > Desktop Size and set Horizontal Virtual Size to 4 and Vertical Virtual Size to 1 then click the Back button and Close.

Click your mouse on any open window. Press and hold your Ctrl and Alt keys and click your mouses left button. These are the default activation keys to initiate your cube.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.
