i can get only 2 desktops in kubuntu even after configuring it for 6 desktops, dont know wat happens it automatically switches to 1 in configuration panel too.

yes i clicked apply then ok but nothing happens it still remains 2 desktops. In fact it reverts back to 1 desktop in the configuration panel. i am using kubuntu 8.04

i cannot change no of virtual desktops , it seems to be fixed at 1

I don't have compiz loaded, so that I can't see.
For me, it's:
KMenu > System Settings > Desktop > Multiple Settings > fillyerboots
I have six, and they work fine setup in there

Right-click on an empty area of your desktop. Select Configure Desktop... > Multiple Desktops and set Number of desktops to 1
Second:
Open ccsm and select General Options > Desktop Size and set Horizontal Virtual Size to 4 and Vertical Virtual Size to 1 then click the Back button and Close.
Click your mouse on any open window. Press and hold your Ctrl and Alt keys and click your mouses left button. These are the default activation keys to initiate your cube.
