I just newly installed 8.04 and suspect that Java is not automatically installed because of following strange behavior of thunderbird: clicking on URL ia an email does nothing where it should be bringing up FF. Could anyone help?

Sure. Here's what you do:
1. Browse to http://www.medibuntu.org/
go to the "Repository How To" tab, and follow the instructions to enable the repo for Hardy Heron.
2. Open Adept Manager, click "Fetch", and then mark the following two packages for installation:
sun-java6-bin
sun-java6-jre
Click "Apply". Watch for a message that forces you to scroll down Sun's EULA and "X" a box to accept their license. Then "OK" and it will finish.
Upon completion, you can Google "java test" and pull up one of the test pages to verify that it's working.

you can add the medibuntu repositories to Adept by opening Adept package manager > click on 'Adept', then 'manage repositories'. In the Software Sources window click on the Third-Party Software tab >click on 'Add' > type in deb http://packages.medibuntu.org/ hardy free non-free click OK then Close.
then just search for sun-java6 and add the packages needed.
