My Kubuntu was so messed up someone suggested reinstalling. So I deleted the Kubuntu partion on my Vista machine and tried to reinstall Kubuntu 8.04. It did a CRC check, built the image and then almost too quickly, it said it was finished. Now I cant even get into Grub loader, it says Error 17. I can't afford to lose my Vista install just yet! Do I use SuperGrub USB? Please guide me through this.

Error 17 is indicating that grub doesn't find the partition that you thought you pointed it to. If the kernel boot line is showing a UUID number, for example, and you reformatted the partition, then the UUID was changed and it would produce this error.

Herman treats the subject of Vista very well.
He also does GRUB. You can make GRUB do this job, using the basic commands Herman gives you.

bootloader and make Vista boot his Kubuntu (i.e., not use GRUB at all):

I posted this in another thread where the grub/mbr issue came up. Please note my experience stops with XP - the "Vista threat" has rekindled my interest in getting linux running on my machines.
[Just a point to cookie77 and anyone else who has an issue concerning,,,

When I tried Rebooting........Grub started to load, then, gave me an 'Error 17'.
Only way out of that, was..................to do a complete Format/Re-Install. (of Windows.)"
You can avoid the complete re-install of windows by re-initializing the MBR (Master Boot Record) of your windows boot drive. I use a program which comes with Norton Ghost called gdisk but you should be able to do the same thing with fdisk. But to do this, you'll have to boot from a floppy/CD or something else other than the drive where grub was installed. This has always removed grub or whatever grub leaves there and returns my drive to the normal windows boot sequence.
Hope this saves you some trouble next time.]

Ohb1, I only got the 'Error 17' once, through my tinkering/experimenting...doing things the wrong way.
Luckily, for me, I did not have ant 'important stuff'...on my computer, whereupon a complete Reinstall (of both Windows and Kubuntu) proved to be the easier way out...for me.
Now, I only stick....to the way that certainly does work for me.
Which is, to have my 2nd Hard-drive 'formatted/patitioned'....as NFTS.
Onto which I install Kubuntu, (from 'within Windows' method).
Should I have uninstall "Kubuntu"....at any time, I find it very easy to do so.
By simply going into the "Add and Remove' program of XP (This should even work for Vista, just as well)........and, removing "Kubuntu" there.
After all, it was installed 'within Windows'.
And, being on my 2nd hard-drive, it also proves to be very easy....to remove the 'Back-up' Folder there (produced by the Installation,via the 'within Windows' method.)
No 'left-over traces' (of Kubuntu/ Dual-Boot Grub)...to be found, since I also use CCleaner......to clean up the Registry (of XP), when I am done.
This 'method' I use........is 'tried-n-truly tested'. (Can be produced, time-n-time again, with NO damage done....to my XP Pro OS.)
It takes me the time to reinstall "Kubuntu", that's all....and, that is nothing, where Time is concerned.
I 'tinker/experiment'...with Linux....to get a better understanding....of 'how' it works, and, being a Disabled Pensioner, I do have plenty of Time 'on my hands'...to learn, to gain Knowledge/Experience.
Most people can't be bothered, to learn, to gain the Knowledge/Experience.
They just want a computer that 'works'! (With no 'input', on their part.)
No computer works 'that way', is only as good as what you are willing to put into it.
This does include the 'expense required'....to change components that are NOT working correctly.
I exist...on a very tight Pension 'budget'. ( If I can do it, why can't people who ARE 'fully-employed' do the same? They can't be bothered, again, so, the problems they face...are of their 'own doing', not mine or yours.)Comment
