thanks for your advice.
im a nooby and have dual booted ubuntu 8.04 with windows XP got through the first half of your fix but could'nt find yhe kppp utility.
any help would be appreciated

kppp is: (a) an individual package that you can install by itself, or (b) installed by "kdenetwork" (which you should have) and (c) installed with kdenetwork, if you install "kde" which installs everything including a lot of stuff you don't need.
