Re: fastest browser?

Well, that would have to be the one I'm using! Really, I only use Konqueror.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

FireFox 3 here, but Konqueror is a good second for me. Other than that, no others!

Well, Lynx is probably the fastest, but not many people would want to use it.

Not to forget dillo, which has a graphical interface and is fast as lighting!

I'll have to try the ones mentioned by the experts.

This is for 4.1 Beta 1 but...

For those who want numbers > News from the land of Konquerors:
(about Konqueror/KHTML)...This brings some significant pure ES performance improvements over previous versions, and lets us put up some great numbers. On the SunSpider benchmark suite, this version does:

* 2.27x better than Firefox 2
* 2x better than QtWebKit from Qt4.4
* About 1.4x faster than KJS 4.0 "Blizzard"
* About 1.152x faster overall than Opera 9.5 beta 2, but it's really a wash, with both engines winning lots of individual benchmarks...

.. but about 1.77x slower than Firefox 3rc1. Ouch.

Re: fastest browser?

Great to hear that konqueror is getting there! I never used it as a browser (but fish and ftp work beautifully!) 'cos I couldn't abide the slowness. If it is _anywhere_ near FF2 then it is going to be the browser of my choice

Re: fastest browser?

faster also equates to the speed of ur internet connection, the faster - the faster ur browser seems. U can tweak FF2 paint dely to a lower value than default which makes it seem to go faster.

fastest at what?

first time opening - opera
loading pages - ff3
loading video - internet connection dependant

etc.

Fastest is a bit loose!
Using:
Mint Kubuntu 7.10 (kde4 dual core 2.2ghz 4gb)
Freenas (nx6325 hp laptop)
Mint Gnome 7.10 (EEE Pc 4g white 1 gb ram)

A little OT, but since people are talking browsers, if anyone has seen activex working with anything on linux, i'd be happy to know it. Thanks.

Re: fastest browser?

I have to say that the latest version of opera is quite fast and smooth. but since i'm not on dialup any more and since firefox 3 is so damn fast, i really like the fox. firefox has extensions and numerous more themes and works with more sites than opera.
On the activeX side of things.
You'll need either wine or cross over.

Using Internet Explorer and ActiveX on CrossOver
Using Firefox/Mozilla Based Browser on Wine
PS, just a lack of thinking
Putting Internet Explorer on your computer will automatically put your computer at risk. Wine makes all window things work, including viruses, so wine or crossover automatically makes you safety level in linux skyrocket. What in the world would you want activeX for neways

Thanks for the info. I had seen the firefox plugin, but it seemed pretty old... not available for 3 and everything... there is also the ies4linux builds, but those seem spotty... perhaps I will just need to plunk down the 40 bucks for crossover...

Oh yeah, to get back on topic, I should amend my post to, "what's the fastest activex compliant browser?"

Edit: Need activex to access the wife's VPN/firewall (SonicWALL)... they say there is no other way. Of course we have no other use for IE... might try building a VirtualBox image... I suppose that should work fine too?
