    problem with formatting new partition

I deleted a ntfs partition and attempted to create a new partition in unallocated space. I got:
/dev/sda2 is mounted; will not make a file system here. What is the best way of getting the partition formatted ext3.

You need to unmount any partition, prior to changing filesystem formats or any other operations on it.

Best way, in my opinion, is to make a GParted Live CD, and boot that to do disk partitioning and formatting work. But that's just me. You can also install gparted with Adept Manager, and run it from the Kubuntu desktop.

The Gparted Live CD ISO image can be downloaded from here. I recommend version 3.4-10 -- there have been some reports of problems with the later versions.
