IF you are running Hardy Heron 8.04, then accessing those partitions is done natively (NTFS access is automatically setup in HH 8,04). So what version of Kubuntu are you running?
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007

Hey, you're just like me I have 2 HDD, 1 for Kubuntu 8.04 (2 partitions), 1 for Windows XP (4 partitions).
Why don't you use Kubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron)? You can download it here:
        http://kubuntu.org/download.php

I think you should have 2 partition (ext3 format) for Kubuntu. The first is for root (mount point: / ), the second is for your home (mount point: /home ). So you can save all your settings when you want to reinstall your Kubuntu (My nightmare is reinstall my Kubuntu 4 times in one day just for some stupid experiments )

IF you are running Hardy Heron 8.04, then accessing those partitions is done natively (NTFS access is automatically setup in HH 8,04).
It's true, are you running Kubuntu 6.06 LTS? You may want to read this topic:

I can't tell you how to become a linux professional because I am not. But the topic "Useful tips for newbie go here" and these links may useful:

Oh, I forgot something, If some evil one tell you to run this in the Konsole:
          Code:
          sudo rm -rf /
DON'T DO THIS, IT WILL DELETE YOUR ALL YOUR DATA IN HDD INCLUDE YOUR SYSTEM.

If something doesn't work (like you can't mount ISO files, can't convert your music with soundKonverter, etc.), you'll need to check if your files are written on NTFS partitions. If so, copy your files to your home folder and do whatever you want, it'll work well.
