    Broken install

    Hi,

I am trying to install Kubuntu64 on my second drive... first stage on install went ok

Grub installed to mbr of my first drive but system would not boot Grub Error 18 (Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS)

Anyway I grabbed DSL CD & managed to restore lilo and my other Distro ...

Booting Kubuntu via lilo drops me to a reduced shell ;-(

My Question is can I use lilo to boot Kubuntu to complete the install or do I have to Grub ?

Even tried Kubuntu64 liveCD but after what seems like hours I end up with a blue screen, I can use mouse but keyboard gives no reponse ...

    TIA

    Re: Broken install

I don't see any reason that you couldn't boot (K)Ubuntu with lilo, but I've never tried it and I can't recall reading anything about doing it. So you're on your own.

That said, I don't think that Lilo instead of Grub is the cause of your problem with Kubuntu. I'm not sure what you mean by "drops me to a reduced shell". From your next sentence, it sounds like the installation did not run to completion. Can you be a little more explicit about what happened and what error messages you got?

There was an article in http://www.tuxmagazine.com in Novemeber or December, if I recall correctly, about dual booting by switching hard drives around and copying Grub stanzas from one drive to another. Check it out, it's not as complicated as it sounds.

      Ok ...

Ok I have Kubuntu64 (using grub! bootloader now)

The problem may have been an old Windows install on hdb1 (LBA) for some reason grub did not like it

      Wiped that partition & reinstalled

Rebooted finished install process but now I'm looking at a blue screen (mouse works) but no keyboard (ie I cannot Ctrl + Alt + Backspace out)

Recovery boot justs leaves me at a root prompt ....

How do I get Kde up & running ?

        Re: Broken install

Use the recovery procedure, login to full screen console then run "startkde". At the very least, you'll get an error message or two. That could be useful in diagnosing the problem. It's too soon to tell, but I suspect problems in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. From the console, you could take a look at your Kubuntu xorg.conf vs. your other distro and see what needs to be changed.

          Re: Broken install [Solved]

          Hi,

Well you are right Xorg.conf was the problem I copied over my distro config tweaked it & I'm up & running

          [me=DefCon1]looks for Firefox lol[/me]

entered recovery in grub ....sudo su to the rescue ,,,,

When you are looking at a blue screen & no keyboard it difficult enough, but for someone who may have never installed Linux at all it would be impossible ,,,

Thanks very much for your help I'm off know to mess around with my new desktop ;-)
