Lost sound, flash videos freeze, etc. after recent updates, getting desperate

I've been searching all over and have found many suggested solutions, but none have helped. My machine was down for a couple of weeks while I ripped out our home office. Upon restarting the machine, there were a slew of updates, including kernel. Everything seemed to go well, until I noticed later that I had no sound.

On further inspection, I've noticed that the desktop effects are acting very weird, AND trying to watch any flash based video results in the video just plain stopping after two seconds.

My first priority is sound. If I can't listen to my Internet radio and MP3s, my productivity is out the window, lost, gone. May be silly, but it's true.

I will list all the outputs of various commands I've seen mentioned while looking for assistance, in hopes that it can help someone to help me best. I must make it clear that I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing and require very basic explanations and instructions most of the time in order to grasp what's going on. I apologize for my ignorance.

    Specs:
    AMD64 3400+
    Biostar GeForce6100-M9
    Sound Blaster Audigy SE
    1.5 GB RAM
    500 + 40 GB WD HDDs
    Kubuntu 8.04
(also added an nVidia video card, can't recall what it is at the moment)

I'd tried removing the sound card and seeing if the onboard sound would work, but it never, ever has. I reinserted the sound card into another slot on the motherboard, just for the heck of it, no change. I put the sound card back into its original location, still no sound.

I have tried selecting earlier kernel versions w/GRUB to no avail. The various sound level devices have not been muted as far as I can tell.

    alsamixer gives me this:

Adjusting the bars up and down has also produced no results.

After trying some of the things suggested in this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449

I have gotten the following outputs:

    Code:
    aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
    card 0: CA0106 [CA0106], device 0: ca0106 [CA0106]
     Subdevices: 1/1

    card 0: CA0106 [CA0106], device 1: ca0106 [CA0106]
     Subdevices: 1/1
     Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
    card 0: CA0106 [CA0106], device 2: ca0106 [CA0106]
     Subdevices: 1/1
     Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
    card 0: CA0106 [CA0106], device 3: ca0106 [CA0106]
     Subdevices: 1/1
     Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
That doesn't look very promising since I don't see anything about a Creative SoundBlaster card anywhere. Or anything I even remotely recognize, but I'm far from experienced at this sort of thing.

    Code:
    lspci -v
03:06.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Audigy LS
Subsystem: Creative Labs Unknown device 100a
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 32, IRQ 20
        I/O ports at bc00 [size=32]
        Capabilities: <access denied>
That at least gives me something, but <access denied> doesn't look like a good thing, either.

I get to step three and that's where I hit the wall.
    (3) Check to see if the ALSA driver for your sound card exists. Go to http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/ and search for your sound card (chipset) manufacturer in the dropdown box. You'll be given a matrix of the sound cards made by the manufacturer. Try to match the chipset you found in step 2 with the driver(green hyperlink text).
That link only goes to a directory, and clicking the one folder in there takes me to somewhere that doesn't seem particularly helpful to the lost and confused like myself.

I read that installing linux-generic would help. No luck.

Saw that lshw -C sound might shed light on things:

alsa-utils is already the newest version.

    Hrm.

And another command I saw elsewhere...

    Code:
    soundconf list
    Names of available sound cards:
    CA0106
Should it be called that or should it somehow reflect something more specific about the card?

Is there a way I can uninstall my soundcard and reinstall it? Would that have any chance at all at bringing sound capabilities back?

Good job of trying to help yourself first!

OK, here's a better link to the ALSA project page. On the left, you will find a link for "soundcards". I just found your Audigy SE card here. There appears to be an issue with input control, but you're only using output so that shouldn't be a problem. (Besides, we already know it used to work).

If there's an integrated sound chip on that BioStar, make double-sure that it is disabled in BIOS.

Does sound work if you boot a Kubuntu Live CD? It might be worth taking a look at /etc/module (or "modules" -- I can't remember), just to see what is loaded.
        Code:
        sudo lsmod
is another way to look at it.

Can you boot the previous kernel? If so, and sound works, then you might want to use Ubuntu Forum or Google and see if there is a documented issue with sound and the new kernel.

        That's it - I'm outta ideas. :P

Re: Lost sound, flash videos freeze, etc. after recent updates, getting desperat

Thanks so much for the reply. I'll take a look at the new ALSA page in just a minute here. Yes, output is all I really care about. I can't recall ever using any of my computers for recording anything.

I have not tried the Live CD, that's an excellent thought. However, what might that tell me if it DOES work with the Live CD and where would I need to go from there?

          Integrated sound is disabled.

          Output from sudo lsmod:

I've found many posts regarding loss of sound happening due to recent updates on Ubuntu Forums and used that as my guide as to things to try and where to look, but it seems that most people are having problems that are just different enough from mine that their solutions haven't worked for me.

This isn't going to be any help to you but I have got exactly the same problem, no sound after the Kernel update, funny thing is mine's an onboard High Definition Audio dveice so different type of sound card, have tried booting off the previous kernel, just get recovery mode. If I do come across a fix I'll let you know

            -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Edit: Mine's sorted now, used;

            sudo apt-get --purge remove linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils

            Followed by;

            sudo apt-get install linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils

Then restarted and it was working fine afterwards

Re: Lost sound, flash videos freeze, etc. after recent updates, getting desperate

Today, after a reinstall & update, Kubuntu 8.04 lost audio, for system and apps. With the livecd, sound is present. This on Dell m1330 xps laptop, dual 1.66, hda-intel ich8 family audio.
after checking with konsole, I have found that output for lspci, aplay -l, cat /dev/sndstat are identical under both live and install kubuntu.
              I have tried several suggestions in the forum, including here;
              http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3086812.0

              Any other ideas?

Hi, I'm back and using this as my note-taking area again. About to try what runebinder suggested. Sorry for disappearing, but things got hectic and I had no time or patience for this for a while, but I'm back at trying, at least for today. I really, really hate relying on my Windows box for internet radio and music. In the meantime, flash video works again, but, of course, no sound.
