I've been searching all over and have found many suggested solutions, but none have helped. My machine was down for a couple of weeks while I ripped out our home office. Upon restarting the machine, there were a slew of updates, including kernel. Everything seemed to go well, until I noticed later that I had no sound.
On further inspection, I've noticed that the desktop effects are acting very weird, AND trying to watch any flash based video results in the video just plain stopping after two seconds.
My first priority is sound. If I can't listen to my Internet radio and MP3s, my productivity is out the window, lost, gone. May be silly, but it's true.
I will list all the outputs of various commands I've seen mentioned while looking for assistance, in hopes that it can help someone to help me best. I must make it clear that I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing and require very basic explanations and instructions most of the time in order to grasp what's going on. I apologize for my ignorance.
Specs:
AMD64 3400+
Biostar GeForce6100-M9
Sound Blaster Audigy SE
1.5 GB RAM
500 + 40 GB WD HDDs
Kubuntu 8.04
(also added an nVidia video card, can't recall what it is at the moment)
I'd tried removing the sound card and seeing if the onboard sound would work, but it never, ever has. I reinserted the sound card into another slot on the motherboard, just for the heck of it, no change. I put the sound card back into its original location, still no sound.
I have tried selecting earlier kernel versions w/GRUB to no avail. The various sound level devices have not been muted as far as I can tell.
alsamixer gives me this:
And continuing to the right:
Adjusting the bars up and down has also produced no results.
After trying some of the things suggested in this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449
I have gotten the following outputs:
That doesn't look very promising since I don't see anything about a Creative SoundBlaster card anywhere. Or anything I even remotely recognize, but I'm far from experienced at this sort of thing.
That at least gives me something, but <access denied> doesn't look like a good thing, either.
I get to step three and that's where I hit the wall.
That link only goes to a directory, and clicking the one folder in there takes me to somewhere that doesn't seem particularly helpful to the lost and confused like myself.
I read that installing linux-generic would help. No luck.
Saw that lshw -C sound might shed light on things:
Following the lead of this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=839537
Hrm.
And another command I saw elsewhere...
Should it be called that or should it somehow reflect something more specific about the card?
Is there a way I can uninstall my soundcard and reinstall it? Would that have any chance at all at bringing sound capabilities back?

(3) Check to see if the ALSA driver for your sound card exists. Go to http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/ and search for your sound card (chipset) manufacturer in the dropdown box. You'll be given a matrix of the sound cards made by the manufacturer. Try to match the chipset you found in step 2 with the driver(green hyperlink text).
